Looking to update my display unit.. Currently 19 inch acer via dvi input...looking to go larger screen size... Looking to spend upto about £250ish.. Been a long time since I've looked at monitors...

Come April time I'll b upgrading my i5 to an ivybridge and also upgrading the gfx card to something newer (pci-express 3)..so will need a new display unit.. Am I better off with a monitor or will a new tv be as good???

Monitors will tend to have higher screen resolutions at smaller screen sizes - resulting in higher pixel density and sharper images for the most part. Therefore a monitor will give you a better quality picture when close up (usually) but will also be much smaller. If screen size is your main concern on the other hand then a tv would be better as you will get a much larger one for the same price.

Wondering whether to go upto 24 inch for a monitor or get a 32 inch tv for that room and then it would get used as a tv.. Dvi connection better than hdmi??

Apologies for all questions, I'm a bit of a noob

I assume we are talking about DVI-D here. DVI and HDMI are both digital connections with pretty much identical picture quality. The only real difference is that HDMI carries sound as well whereas DVI requires a separate sound cable. Also HDMI has a maximum output resolution of (1920x1080) - 1080p whereas DVI-D can output up to 2560x1600

Look up some old posts, basically TVs aren't all that great for computers. Gamers may notice increased input lag due to all the processing that a TV uses to 'polish up' the image. Monitors generally leave that up to the videocard rather than doing it themselves.

There is no quality difference between DVI and HDMI. The 'converter' plugs are cheap for a reason.. they both use the same signal so nothing needs to to be converted. Same signal / same quality. (and like mentioned, HDMI adds audio as an option)
