Hi
I am after a bit of advice as I have a strange network problem.
I recently purchased a DLINK DES-1008D switch to give me some more Ethernet ports, the switch is connected to my router with a CAT5 cable approximately 5 meters long.
The lights on the switch all come on but a have connection when I plug my laptop into the switch.
The strange part is I have an old Netgear switch I have borrowed from a friend and if I place this switch between the router and my new DLINK one it all works ok.

Any advice/ help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Matt

Work it through slowly. If it works with the netgear in place then try moving the router-netgear cable into the port on the slink where the working netgear-dlink cable was and see what happens

Cheers for the reply, I have tried that already and had the same result.
Something I didn't mention was that I have swapped out the long 5 meter cable and still nothing however if I plug the DLINK on a short cable into the router it all works ok.

I think it's fairly clear then - the 5m cable is wired in a way that the dlink doesn't like.

I wonder if it's a crossover cable and the dlink doesn't auto switch the ports.

That was my first thought, the Dlink DES-1008D is supposed to cope with straight or crossover cables.
I haven’t tried it with a crossover cable yet I will test it tonight.
