i am currently learning to drive and have a big problem
no money to buy a car
no money to insure a car as i am only getting 400 a month which isnt enough money and parents dont drive to add them to the policy.
I currently am after a seat ibiza would it be advisable to take otu a loan when i am 18 or could i do it now

Thanks
Paul

I would seriously consider not bothering. It took me a good 2.5/3 years to save up earning that amount of money before I could drive, and then I was skint for 2 years afterwards.

Is it really worth it?

Whether you should take out finance or not at that age is completely up to you, i'd always recommend against it though if there is another option, especially as your on a small wage. Running a car will 90% be more expensive then you think.

Well im finnishing my apprentership in july so we will see then what my pay will be like.

I would wait until you have your feet firmly on the ground and in a decent secure job first (easier said then done I know). If you take out finance and then you loose your job or whatever, things aren't going to be fun.

Live in the middle of no where too 32 miles to work every day costing 140 a month on buss fares
If it is 32 miles to work (64 round trip) thats around 1300 miles per month just to work and back. Even if you picked a car with decent fuel economy (lets say 45mpg, I've no idea what kind of journey you make) at the current cost of fuel (£1.30/L+) that would cost you £170+ a month anyway. Add onto that insurance costs for an 18 year old, road tax, maintenance/repair bills and you'd actually be down quite a lot of money compared to your current spend on commuting. Granted you would have a car, but if you're making £400 a month I wouldn't have thought you'd see much change from that after the costs of running a car?

I didn't learn to drive until I could afford a car. Didn't seem much point.

I learnt at 23yrs old for this reason. At <21yrs old unless employed you are basically going to get absolutely hammered by insurance. I don't know many 17yr old lads who can afford £2k min per year insurance excluding road tax, fuel, vehicle purchase, vehicle maintenance...

Tell me about it. I managed it on £300/mo but that's _all_ I had money for. After insurance (£120/mo), fuel(£70/mo back in the days) and all the other gubbins I had like £50/mo to get drunk on. :P

Ninja Edit: Car was £700 from a friend, it was a shed but it had 4 wheels and an engine and lasted 3 years before it blew up. :P

125cc motorbike.

80mpg
£15 a year tax
£500 to buy
£100 to insure
£200 for helmet and CBT.

Even if it's an old 125 it will cost more than £100 for a new rider to insure. I'd go for the bike route, £100 for a cbt and you can ride for 2 years, that's less than it cost you a month in bus fares, I get about 80 mpg out of mine, insurance is a bit higher due to it being a fairly new sports 125. But I think a bike or a lolped would be ideal for your situation.

Maybe get another job? Or do more hours? That seems like the only way you will be able to afford to drive. Make no mistake, driving is very expensive! Taking out a loan is pointless, because you just wouldn't be able to pay it back. And no one would give you a loan either.

Out of interest, what do you do to only earn £400 a month? I thought minimum wage was at least £800 a month ish?

i was 19 when i got my first car and insuance cost £500 mind it was for an old metro like 10 years ago lol but like others said unless u have a perm job (rare atm) keep to the bus if u loose ur job u don't have to worry about keeping the car active

Think he said he was doing an apprenticeship

To put things in perspective for you, my brother (who incidently appears to be born on the very same day as you) has a 1.2 ibiza

It costs him £2100 to insure on a limited mileage policy with a tracker. Thats before fuel, tax, mot spares/repairs etc. It's a big expense. What ever you do don't give up learning to drive, theres nothing stopping you continuing to take the bus! I wish my fuel bills was that a month :(

thanks for the advice everyone sorry if i wasnt very clear.Thing is too is its the only computer job in there area do to being in the countryside

Also its 32 miles a day combined total.
