I recently passed my test and have been looking into cars; corsa, clio, punto and the usual :) However, when I've entered these into the car insurance sites I get really really high quotes of £6000. Do you guys have any advice on first cars and where best to get reasonable insurance prices?

Ring companies up directly. Also add a parent or both onto the policy.

And if possible, try different cars to the usual Clio, Fiesta, Saxo etc. Try looking at Mondeos or even Volvos etc as they aren't the usual cars for new drivers.

for a 1st car you should be looking at a 1-1.4litre, I had a 1.4 306 for a year and a half and my 1st year insurance was 1100 in scotland. then I got a 306 Dturbo and it didn't budge. So I got a faster car with no increase :d but these days insurance has gone up loads. and I'm now paying 1000 for a 318IS bmw. I'm 22 with 3 yrs no claims & 2yrs full licence.

try a 1.2 fiat brava mate. i think that was one of the cheapest cars i;ve found to insure a new driver on.

*edit* around a 99 plate

Phone directly! Don't use comparison sites, if you do use it as rough guide, very rough!

I was going to use the cheapest results on the comparison sites, and ring a few of them up to speak further with them :)

I've looked on confused.com, comparethemarket.com and moneysupermarket.com :)

Thank-you

I found Elephant have wiped the floor with everyone elses quotes, and that was with a 1.0 52 plate Corsa. Got a quote of £1868, closest I could get with anyone else was £2210. The cheapest car other than the Corsa I've found was a Ford Ka, which starts at £2300, this is with all the insurers.

I just don't understand why the Corsa is better than all the others :/

I feel sorry for the young of today, there is no way in hell I could have been able to pay 2k+ to insure my car when I was 17.

650 quid I paid for my first year on a 1.25 Fiesta with pass plus.

I'm nearly 23 and I'm getting these daft quotes! :(

Get an old mini cooper, low down will feel fast and handle well even though they are only 60hp (if that) they are light and nimble :)

But cost a huge amount to maintain and to purchase, which to be honest outweighs the cost of insuring a more reliable, safer modern car.

OP: Look at Micras and all sorts. :)

It's still a joke for those of us with a clean insurance record, mainly down to the scroats who are ambulance chasing. My insurance more than doubled this year and would have been more than my first lot of insurance at age 17 had I chosen to renew. That's for a mid-insurance group car for someone aged 30+ with 10+ years no claims...

New driver insurance sucks, but then again it always did. Tried going third party?

I've been looking on and off for about a month, ready for when I pass.. Elephant are just so far ahead of everyone else. They are even beating Admiral every time, which doesn't make any sense since they are the same company. I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay silly for a crapshack on wheels for a year. :D

At least after a year, I'll not know what to do with all my extra spare cash! :p

Not everyone is suffering from this - mine looks to be lower this year than ever - finally starting with a 3, infact :)
