Hi,

I have very recently got my license and am looking for my first car. During my search i have come across the Rover 25 which is cheap to buy and cheap to insure. How are these cars? Should I stay away?

Regards

Azam

the 25 tends to do headgaskets but i would expect most to have been replaced with the better one by now. just look out for one that's been done and shouldn't be to bad.

keep your eyes open for other cars though :)

They aren't a great car by any stretch of the imagination but they are dirt cheap - ultimately with your first car it's about getting on the road and little else

As above watch for Head gasket failure on the petrols, the diesels are pretty stinky, horrible but reliable

I would recommend a MK.6 Fiesta, Polo 9N/9N3, Toyota Yaris, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, and possibly most other things before a Rover 25.

Look at insurance for some of those. A Seat Ibiza 1.2 70PS would make a decent first car, the insurance on them is cheap too, and they are quite good on fuel for the age. The 3 cylinder engine sounds much more lively and interesting than a small 4 cylinder as well, and is more torquey. :)

I read on here before that you shouldn't go for the typical 1.2 corsa etc but try a car from the next class up, with a small engine. So try a 1.4 skoda octavia or ford focus for example. I did it completely wrong and paid through the nose for a 1 litre corsa :D

Ahh yes, the insurance on a Mk.1 Focus is apparently very reasonable. But who wants a weak engined Mk.1 Focus?

To be fair I had a 1.6 focus zetec, the car was quite a lot of fun because of the handling characteristics. I would have liked that as a first car even with a smaller engine.

Who wants a weak engined Polo? ;)

How do you know it doesnt have a 2.8 V6 under the bonnet? ;)

I didn't want one. And I don't want one. I wish I had bought something a little less slow and I have been planning on replacing it for months...

I think I'd still rather have it to a Mk.1 Focus though. Because it is cute, and welding your foot to the floor and buzzing it to keep up with people in better cars makes every drive a challenge. :p

cycling will get you from a to b

So will a bus pass. Or teleportation!
Unfortunately a bus pass will get you there a few thousend years quicker though, with current technology. You and the planet will also be more alive when you arrive.
