Hi there. I've just bought and setup the following rig:

Hiper 580W Modular PSU HPU-4B580
OCZ Gold 2GB Kit PC2-5400 DDR2 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB
Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Socket 775
19" Hyundai TFT WIDESCREEN N91W
Intel Conroe Core 2 Duo E6300 RET
Sony DW-G120AB 16x DVDRW Black DL

We powered it on and it just doesn't post, the CPU fan doesn't spin when the 4 pin connector is plugged into the Mobo either. We've tried swapping out the graphics and the RAM and neither worked. Any ideas?

Yes, we've got the 24 pin and the smaller 4 pin both connected. The only other thing connected to the mobo is the power switch. Even with only these, the CPU fan spins then stops, then spins then stops. What is going on!?

I got the exact same thing on a DQ6 and it was the RAM!

Could you please elaborate? What RAM etc, what you did? We tried 2 sticks of RAM seperately in different slots and nothing seems to work. The RAM we've got is compatable with the DS3.

long shot , but are you sure the small connectors are all the right way round on the mobo , to the reset sw power sw etc? sounds like the reset sw could be jammed?

The only one that is connected is the pwr switch.

Originally they all were, but have removed as much as possible for troubleshooting purposes and now the only one left is the power switch connector, needed to turn it on.

It's so frustrating.

With the 12v 4 pin connection REMOVED, the CPU fan spins up and the system stays on but still no post.

With the 12v 4 pin connection PLUGGED IN, the CPU fan spins up momentarily then stops, then the system turns off, then starts again etc.

What on earth is going on. I've built plenty of systems before but i've never had one that wouldn't even post.

It's stripped down bare at the moment.

The GFX has been swapped out - no changes
The PSU has been swapped out - no changes

Anyone got any ideas before I smash this new rig into tiny pieces!!!

Cheers

i think you will find you need the reset sw on for the mobo to work m8 ;)

Is that true?

I tried originally with the reset sw attached, although it could possibly have been the wrong way round.

Now though it's not connected and is behaving the same.

Surely when connected it doesn't make any difference UNTIL you hit the switch then it shorts the two pins across and resets?

This is why I thought it wouldn't need connecting if troubleshooting.

Am I wrong then?

I had this with the DS3

Turns out there are some stupid settings in the BIOS for the fans, i didnt realise but mine turned off while in windows CPU shot to about 90Deg.

Switched off all the Fan options so they all ran at full power, was fine after

Maybe when I can get it to actually post I will be able to get into the bios. Until them i'm a little bit stuffed

Right, we've now tried another identical mobo, straight out of the case, and still no joy. The CPU fan starts to spin, then stops, then spins, then stops. We're thinking it could be incompatable RAM, although we've seen working systems with identical setups.

Anyone else think it could be the RAM?

Just to clarify

We have swapped out the PSU - same problem
Swapped out the graphics card - same problem
Swapped out the motherboard - same problem
Tried the reset switch both ways round, and disconnected!! - same problem

We have the system out on an antistatic surface, with the PSU plugged into it, the ram installed in one slot, and the CPU and fan installed.

The GFX card is not installed as it was doing the same with it in place.

Surely it's got to be the ram?

Very unlikely both sticks would be goosed though. You've tried them separate and you still get the problem. I wouldn't rule out the CPU TBH.

Yeah - have you tried completely re-seating the CPU?

When I moved my kit from case A to case B, it displayed similar symptoms because the heatsink wasn't mounted properly on the CPU.
