New engine for my Anglia

Sooooooo, back in August 2009 there was a big engine disaster on the way to the Retro Rides Gathering straight after a very hurried engine rebuild. I'd stuck in some serious hours to get the car there and made it about 1/4 of the way to the top of the M3 here:

Gutted wasn't the word and the car has sat in my garage since, not moved or touched other than to shift it out the way. I couldn't face rebuilding the engine again so I've just been putting it off and putting it off until last week.

I decided the sensible option would be to get hold of a runner that would drop straight in and I can rebuild the 1700 later and just swap it over when ready. I decided on a stock 1200cc, what the car had when it rolled out the factory, and as luck would have it I found one at not unsensible money not too far away. A quick blat in the T down to Brands Hatch, some pictures of the queen from Barclays changed hands and the guy helped me heft it into the passenger seat.

Then I was stuck, because when I got home I couldn't get it out the car. Too heavy and too high up. But I had bought an engine crane and this is where I am now:

Roof down, hoiked it out, dragged it across the carpark and now it's in the garage minus a few bits.

So I've just got to remember what is and isn't compatible. So far it's de-clutched, de-dynamo'd and de-engine mounted. It should drop straight onto my 2000E gearbox with the other clutch, it'll need a spacer on one engine mount, exhaust will need extending a little and throttle cable will need adapting.

But this stuff should take no time at all once I'm back from Le Mans and puts me firmly into 2CV territory in terms of acceleration :D

I rebuilt it for RRG09, with all new bearings, seals, rings and bore hone. It transformed it. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to run it in and the first trip was out on the motorway. It didn't last long :(

:( I remember that the first time around!

Glad you've got some motivation for it now (literally), even with the 1200 it'll be quite fun :D

I'm sort of concerned it won't be powerful enough for the close ratio gearbox, specifically pulling away with an ultra long first gear, but this is just temporary so I can knock about and do a few jobs on the T.

What actually went wrong, did something let go?

Not actually sure yet because I haven't stripped it down yet. It started making horrible grating noises inside and was bellowing out heavy dark grey smoke. It seized when I pulled over but released once it had cooled down at home. It'll start and run but as soon as the temperature rises it starts making the same noise.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's a bearing and not a bore. Bearing damage should be easy-ish to fix if it hasn't run anything too dry but bore damage means it's basically scrap.

I like pre-crossflows ;)

Plus all my manifolds and tuning stuff is pre-crossflow.

My dad had a similar thing a few years ago with his previous Anglia.

Had a 1500 pre-crossflow in there, which died, so he decided to stick a 1600 x-flow in there instead.

Did all the work on it, loads of long hours, ready for the 105e Owners' Club AGM.

Got 15 miles down the A12, and it went pop.

Needless to say, he wasn't too happy! Got it recovered back home, and his wife just said to him "go on, go and have a look at it" (it was a weekend they'd planned together for months), cos she knew he would be in a sulk if he'd been sat indoors with the car in the garage!

So, I can appreciate your pain with it "letting go" on the way to a show after spending plenty of time on it!
