I expect that the lack of a thread on this already indicates that no one cares, but thought I'd make one anyway just in case.

Here's what we know:
Server name: Fippy Darkpaw
Opening date: 15th February 2011 approx. 6pm GMT
Server type: PvE Progression

In brief, a new official progression server will be opening soon. Like the old progression servers, you start off with all the expansions locked until a time where the nerdiest of the no-lifers complete a number of challenges to unlock the next expansion. Unlike the old progression servers, it sounds like there will be an extended grace period before unlocking the new content, as well as providing a server wide vote that can extend this period if the majority decides that mincing about in lambent greaves is sufficient.

Here's the lowest of the lowdown:

As with the previous progression servers, players will need to defeat certain challenges to unlock newer expansions. Once these challenges have been defeated there will be a grace period where the server will stay in the current expansion. After the grace period, players will be able to vote through an in game poll to unlock the next expansion. The voting period will be one week.

Initially the grace period will be 90 days before voting will start for Kunark, then 60 days for each expansion after that. At some point we will even have a vote to see if players wish to change that grace period.

If the majority of players vote to unlock the next expansion, the next expansion will unlock at the end of the poll. If the majority of players voted to stay with the current expansion, then there will be a one week grace period before another poll will be posted. This will happen until a majority players vote to unlock the next expansion.

Here's an official thread on the subject:

One thing I don't understand is that they call it a time-locked progression server yet state that players need to defeat challenges to open the expansions. At least with an absolute minimum of nearly 3 months before kunark is unlocked, and possibly longer, the poopsockers can't ruin the server before the (relatively) normal people get a chance to quit after remembering how painful and boring the game is.

Anyway if you fancy a go then there a couple of packs available on stream to either bring you all the way up to date with the expansions for £30, and almost all the way for £16. I'd most likely get the cheaper one as chances are I'll be sick of it in 15 mins flat, but who knows.

Sound great, shame I don't have the time to play this :)

They should do this with WoW in the future with 6 months break in between all expansions :D :D :D

I'm in! Even have a current sub :p And I'll be voting "no!" to any expansion unlocks past Kunark (maybe Velious!)

If I can find my discs I'm certainly up for it :)

As I recall you didn't even need the discs, just download an .exe from SOE's website and patch yourself in to the middle of next week ;)

Haven't played this since the end of PoP. Might be fun until Luclin unlocks lol.

Besides a very, very brief foray in to the game I have never given it much a shot. In its prime I was far too involved with UO. This might be a good time for me to finally give it a proper shot.

You've ruined your own lands, you'll not ruin mine!
Damn it, you're just another mirage!
A snake kicks you for 14 points of damage!

Pain and suffering tries to strike you but misses
Karnors: Over 40 million trains served
/ooc how much haste is on the fbss?
BOAT at docks
/shout DING!!

and the one message that fills everyone with dread, usually during the drachnid run from firiona vie to lake of ill omen...

You appear

Bit more info:

  • Server will open roughly 6pm on the 15th Feb.
  • No Beastlords (Luclin) and Berserkers (Gates of Discord) until the relevant expansions are opened.
  • Slower experience gain across the board.
  • Boats are still broken (lol) so translocators in place.

Also sounds like they're really going to try and stop people griefing the server by progressing too fast. Votes will be account based and require a character of minimum level to participate.

And finally:

Server stopping at Velious:: That is actually something that interest us here. We are curious if people really DO want that "Classic" server that is stuck at Velious, or if they will finally get bored enough to unlock Luclin.

Almost starting to get quite excited about this.

good grief, lets not start the vanilla wow discussions again. EQII would be my second game of choice (after LOTRO) if i wasnt currently setting fire to everything with a mage in wow.

please delete this thread, I have been clean of the EQ for nearly 4 years.... but I'm getting tempted to try this new server out...

You really don't want to know that your account is probably active then? Seems SoE have given everybody free play time...

Not that I know of seeing as EQ 2 is free to play, I think maybe just Everquest to entice people back to play on the new progression server.

edit: Aww, been through all the servers and can't find either of my original characters from 1999 :'(

with the free time i am loading up the game now. i thought i would have the same probem finding my old characters from Vazelle server but if you download the new station launcher it tells you where your characters were migrated too.

So painful, pretty sure release day wasn't as crowded as south qeynos is at the moment, because now other races know to come here to level early.

Also it doesn't get dark any more and you can actually see more than 2 foot when it rains. Bit disappointed.
