Because they aren't Xeons if they are i7s :confused:

The difference between an i7 and a Xeon chip (E5-1xxx) is better wafer + ECC + server tweaks (Virtulisation shizz).

For the E5-2xxx and E5-4xxx chips there are 2 and 4 QPI links respectively (plus E5-1xxx tweaks) allowing them to be in boards with other CPUs!

Unfortuantly, it's the way it works.

I'd love to shove two 990Xs into my Mac Pro for cheap but I'll have to settle for two X5690s please Santa

How about 80 cores/160 threads

I was offered several 8 core 16 thread 1567 xeon es chips that may even have overclocked but then i looked at the price of the motherboards :eek:

The motherboard shown only comes in a chassis and that alone is $9000 without cpu's memory etc

Honestly it will be cheaper and less power to build a quad magny cours box with at least double the output.

Am not sure on the 4 socket boards The Mr B's will know but looking at what specs are available for the evga apparently you can switch one off very handy
