Hopefully I have a new, identical S478 motherboard coming to me in the next few days to the one that broke a few days back - will I still need to reinstall Windows?

Shouldn't think so, remember to check the bios settings are same/similair to what the old ones were, if you leave anything on windows will detect the new hardware and install software drivers for it. Cancel that reboot and disable the appropriate option in the bios.

I replaced a friends of mine last week after his blew after a lightning strike. I didn't have to reinstall XP & used a totally different make of board.

I guess it depends on if the chipset is changing.

I think I went from an NF2 to NF4 and had to reformat. I can imagine going from an NF4 to a 965 as I will be tonight it's a 99.9% certainty

Unfortunately it was a semi-forced upgrade as my DFI took a nose dive when the PSU decided to die. So it's not an option. Ah well, a good reformat will have it running fresh as a daisy
