Hi all,

This will be my first self-build - have always had pre-built systems in the past and have been limited to a laptop (and PS3) for the past few years while i've been at uni.

Anyway the time has come to build.. i want a nice futureproof(ish) gaming setup that i can overclock (maybe not straight away) - budget is around £700 - £800.

A friend suggested getting the SSD for OS. Thoughts?
Cheers

its a decent setup, however will only 60gb be enough? I wouldn't think it would be, so maybe a secondary larger drive? ie 500gb 3.5inch?

edit: you also haven't specced a DVD drive?

edit2: you also don't have a cooler for that CPU. Get the retail version that comes with a heatsink in the package or you'll need to find 3rd party cooling solution, plus the retail has 3 year instead of 1 year warranty.

edit3 (lol): wait until tomorrow for the new deals to be posted as some of the components might change in price literally overnight :)

This is what I would get. The case choice is entirely personal so you could change back to yours but this is a very good case. The ssd you chose uses sata II whereas the crucial m4 makes use of sata 6gb/s and is faster. I've chosen a different power supply as the one you listed only has 2 pci-e connectors whereas the xfx has 4 which should allow you do to sli further down the line.

I only chose the oc version of the i5 2500k as it's cheaper but the 2500k can be sourced for £159.99 at retail.

Edit: Assuming you have a hard drive, os and dvd drive.

Thanks Joey2cool

DVD drive - just need a cheapish one, no blu-ray

Cooler - Thanks Pohly, i'll opt for that one!

Good spot with the SSD - SATA II would have been a silly choice! (Thanks Eric's Collar)

Here's my revised spec (added dvd, 1tb hdd, cooler, mounting kit) now totals £887.87 arg!

Primarily for gaming and looking to shave down costs? Cut down that RAM mate. You won't even max out 4GB gaming so just get a cheaper 2x2GB set. I won't spec you anything right now as the new weekly deals will be coming out in a couple of hours:D

Also if your not too bothered about SLI down the line you can go for an MSI P67A-C45 and an Antec High Current Gamer 620w PSU and that will take off a further £45

Here's my final spec - buying today:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail

MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 (REV B3) Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard w/ FREE CM Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler

Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl Gaming Midi Tower Case

8GB Corsair Memory XMS3 DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9 Dual Channel Desktop

Crucial m4 64GB 2.5" SATA-III Solid State Hard Drive

700W OCZ ModXStream Pro Modular Silent SLI/Crossfire Ready ATX2.2 Power
Supply

MSI GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

---------------------------

Is there anything else i need for a new build? Not done one before, any consumables or anything?

Cheers

Do you need a mounting bay for an SSD like the akasa one spec'ed above?
usually they come with their own adapter so they fit in a 3.5 inch bay. however, if it didnt, then they are perfectly happy to be taped to the bottom of the case, since they have no moving parts, and generate virtually no heat

Well i built my machine last night and it's a beauty. I'll make a seperate build thread and add some pics in there at the weekend.

It went fairly smoothly, although one thing is annoying me:

After much deliberation about which way up to fit the PSU, i eventually opted for the fan down approach (the fractal case has a bottom vent for this) and installed it, however there is a rattle coming from the fan inside the PSU (700w OCZ ModXstream)

I can't be bothered RMAing it and having to wait for a replacement, so i think i'll have a fiddle tonight and see if i can stop the rattle. Surely its just the fan catching on the metal cover grille?

Also if your not too bothered about SLI down the line you can go for an MSI P67A-C45 and an Antec High Current Gamer 620w PSU

Will this PSU not cope with SLI? I got this for a recent build, and it seems like a good, high quality psu. I was thinking of adding another gpu down the line though, and was hoping this would have enough juice.

Though i'm relatively new to the PC game, i'd say no.

I've read a few threads and some even suggest that 700W isn't a comfortable rate for SLI, but i guess it depends on the GPU's.
