I am just about to move into a Brand new flat.. It currently has a telephone socket in the wall so i assume it goes to the local exchange however there is no dial tone..

Now i do not really want a land line.. But can i get ADSL without paying BT line rental? Do any BB packages offer line rental as part of the package?

Virgin / Telewest are my other alternative, but i get the impression ill be waiting weeks / weeks for them to connect it .. and i only want a 6 month contract which virgin dont offer.

Its all very annoying.. anyone got any good suggestions?

Im looking for about 2-3mb BB.. I have been offered orage free with my mobile phone, but requires BT line rental. Grrr

No.

A few, but most of the ISPs offering both are crap (Pipex/Tiscali, TalkTalk). It isn't free though - it's just factored into the price.
Bear in mind most of the "free" or "free activation" deals are at a longer contract than 6 months (typically 12 months).

Hmm that sucks.

Well might have to get a BT line i guess :( Trouble is its a brand new house and even the postcode dosnt seem to get recognised in most places.

You will have to pay 124.99 to get it connected then if its a new build and an engineer is required to reconnect it (highly likely as no dial tone)

Doubt it. You have to pay £125 for installation of a new line - seeing as he already has a line there it shouldn't cost that. When I moved into my new house the phone line was totally dead until I called up to get it activated. It was working within 2 hours with no installation/enable charges.

A newly installed line has a 12 month minimum contract but I'm quite (not 100%) certain that when I got my existing line re-activated, I only had a 3 month contract period.

Not the case anymore after the 1st May. Everyone has 12 months contract now, and every engineer visit to connect a line now has a charge now since 1st July.

Youre in the same boat as me mate. My new address has a line but it needs activating inorder for me to take my talktalk with me. And to activate it means signing a 12 month contract with BT just so talktalk can take it over.

So id end up paying 30 quid a month at least to talktalk plus 12 quid to BT.

I just ended up signing up with Virgin Media. £30 quid for phone/tv and 2mb broadband.

I moved into a flat last year, no phone line and i didn't really want one. Had NTL/virgin installed. Free installation. took about a week i think. 12 month contract @£18/month but they are doing it for £10/month for the first year now. Seems the most simple option. If the worst happend and you moved out after 6months i suppose you would just have to pay the remaining £60 off.

Oh thats just for broadband BTW. I still dont have/want a phone.

Ok ..well it looks like Virgin is off the cards at least for cable, as my new flat is on a new road which dosnt have cable fitted currently :( So the only option is ADSL..

So looks like its going to have to be the cheapest line rental package from BT. And then ill get a decent ADSL connection for a 12month contract.
