New floor boards, old house, odd size...

Hi all,

been doing out the back bedroom and removed the carpet as I noticed a sunken floorboard. Figured I would sort this before new carpet arrives.

This board it turns out is new or at least a recent replacement, its 19mm in height, but all the other boards are 22mm.

I thought easy just replace it, except the usual places such as B n Q etc only do 19mm high....

So I know why the wrong height one was used at least.

Any solutions? ideally there is this board and another that is a bit warped (it has been ripped up before for electrics it seems) that I want to replace.

I had this issue. A bodged repair on rotting joists, plus weird and uneven depth replacement boards over the rotted area meant unevenness in the way you describe. I ended up fixing the joists and acquired replacement floor boards from a local reclamation yard. It was under £10 per metre for ours if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a few numbers I lined up to call after work tomorrow night, a couple of timber yards I thought may be able to help.

I initially thought I could put something under the newer board that is not high enough to raise it. But that's just bodging it again.

Ideally new boards but the correct height seem the best way to go.

Hmm think I may have found some actually, 600mm wide so far to wide. May ring them tomorrow.

I'm trying to get it done by next saturday (room below is having the ceiling boarded and skimmed)

I just thought it would be a simple order and collect tomorrow night!

We too had the same problem, our boards were 20mm as they were apparently sourced from Europe during the mid 80s when the housing boom (and thusly materials shortage) was in full swing.

I ended up getting 22mm boards planed down to 20mm, nibbled the edge of the tongue/groove on the existing boards away and cut the pine boards to fit. Worked well, and as the boards were screwed down instead of nailed they no longer squeak.

Jewsons, Travis Perkins and any reputable wood merchant will sell boards of the size you need, I've replaced loads of old Oak boards with new 22x600x4200 boards.

Mine were an odd size also.

I wanted to restore the floorboards in the living room but a few of them were ruined and I struggled to find replacements. In the end I stole some from the upstairs bedroom as they were the same size. And for the gaps left in the bedroom, I bought some plywood of the same thickness and manually cut it to size.

Thanks for that, there is a Jewsons near me!

Not the sort of place I have looked for before so as soon as the DIY places were out I was a bit lost.

Thanks all as well, makes me feel better that I am not the only one who has had similar issues!

If you're carpeting, could you cut some 3mm ply to the size of the 19mm floorboard and screw it down on top to raise it up?

No idea how difficult the floorboard is to replace or whether this would be cheaper mind - just a thought.

I seen that on wickes and was wondering if I could use it. I figured as it was chipboard it wouldn't be suitable. Some googling suggests this is the sort of stuff you put down in a loft. Do you think it would be ok? It was the first stuff I looked at!

Rang a few places and called into Jewsons 20mm is the best I can get so far.

Running out of time.

Jellybeard999 I think this is the sort of thing I will have to do!

I completely missed the part where you said you were carpeting. Just get any ch!p or ply the right thickness and stick it in there!
