Right lads i want to pick yur brains if you have any of the new gen Focu,Civic or leon, looking at a motor for the GF, which i will end up driving at the weekends,i would like to know what you think of them all, i have had a go in the forcus titanium 1.6 which was ok, but the car looks bland, im looking at 1.8/2.0 engines, anybody got any of the cars? what do you think of them, handling, build quality, interior, general opinions/spec?

The new civic is really growing on me saw one today and it looks pretty agressive, the leon aswell looks distinctive albeit nowhere near as nice as the older model.

Anybody got any opinions? or any other models in this sector to throw in?

The Civic, its near £17,000 for the mid range model and even buying through a broker gets you 200 quid off at best.

You could buy the Focus in ST trim for less than this and if you wanted the top of the range Titanium TDCi 2.0 it would be under £14k compared to over £18k for the top of the range Civic diesel.

Civic is very nice but expensive but will hold its value better than a focus
The leon will be more in the middle pricewise but and should hold its value better than the focus.

If it were my cash i'd go for the civic but get an ex demo.

The civic has an odd model structure, the best value seems to be the EX but it has a silly low roof, and if you spec up an SE it works out loads more the roof is too low for 6'+

Thats hardly going to help when you need to find an extra 4k to splash out on it to start with - in 3-4 years time it'll not be worth nearly that much more.

According to what? Thats not the case with previous Focus v previous Leon.

The focus depreciates like hell tho? not really looking for a diesel, i still dont like em as much as a petrol tbh.Anyway cost aside whats the general concensus on the cars, i can normally get discounts on most cars so im too worried about what list prices are.

The only problem with the focus is that it looks a tad bland.

No it doesnt, they are stupidly expensive on the used market - about the same price as Leons etc.

Sure, but there are few, if any, discounts to be had with the Civic.

Parkers Random example
leon

SEAT Leon Hatchback
1.9 TDi SX (110ps) 5d

Cost New ('04) £ 13947
Franchised Dealer £ 9720
Independent Dealer £ 9175
Private Good £ 8395
Private Poor £ 6685
Part Exchange £ 7850

focus

Ford Focus Hatchback
1.8 TDCi LX 5d 2004/53
Insurance Group 6 (get a quote)
Average mileage: 10,000 miles
Cost New ('04) £ 15232
Franchised Dealer £ 8775
Independent Dealer £ 8250
Private Good £ 7650
Private Poor £ 6525
Part Exchange £ 7350

Base on new price and buying a good private the deprication is 46% for the leon and 50% for the focus

But that only takes into account depreciation as a percentage of list price. Typically, discounting on Fords is higher than that on Honda's and Seats - so although the Focus is worth £700ish less than the Leon, you'd probably have paid more than £700 less for it in initially.

OK so take £700 of the list price leaves you with £14532 still £585 more expensive than a Leon and you could knock some off the leon still
