So work have said i can have a folding rig at work, leave it to run virtually 24/7 all year round, we only shut off over xmas.

So i was thinking about an AMD Bulldozer 8150 or are the sandybridges still better, well enough to make the price difference matter.

I was hoping for running two gtx460, a mATX setup to keep it a bit smaller.

I hear linux is best for maximum points, which one? And any install guides aimed at folding.

The bulldozer pulls a lot off power, ivybridge is not as much as sandy (i belive)
thanks

For folding on GPU's winders is better, for folding bigadv Linux is better. But you can run Linux in a VM using Virtualbox to get almost (less 10-15%) real linux performance under windows. I'd get the highest core/thread Intel processor you can, a couple of 460's or whatever you can get around £100 but don't go matx it'll get too hot unless you have an airconned comms room to put it in.

The i7 3930k looks good with 6 cores. 2011 socket is it worth it over a 2600k on 1155 socket?

Full ATX it is then, it will be stuffed behind my work pc which is just a Pentium 4 (i have tried folding on it but 300 PPD isnt worth it)

I could always add more than 2 gpu then i suppose.

Best performance for a single socket machine would definitely be a 3930K (besides the overpriced 3960K). I nearly bought one myself as I needed a new rig, but decided that because I don't fold 24/7 nowadays I'd go for an IB 3770K as the build price and power draw were less.

Yes 3770k looks more realistic price wise.

How important is memory speed and timings, or is it just wise to spend as much as you can, or is the money better spent on a better gpu card than the gtx460?

What are the top coolers these days, i currently use a Noctua NH-D14 and it has been okay is there anything better that would fit in a Fractal Design Define R3 Midi Tower, they still seem to offer the best fan options for the price?

Dual GTX460 cost about £240 or is a single GTX570 better?

Memory speed does increase performance, if you go for a s2011 I'd go for the samsung green 16gb kit, for the money you can't go wrong, and it will clock to 2133/2400mhz. The Noctua NH-D14 is the best air cooler I've ever owned. Not sure how much ppd a 570 produces, possibly around 20K?, I have a gtx460 myself which I tried yesterday and it gave around 12K, but it ate into the ppd of the CPU so I would say you'd need at least 2 of those to make it worth while... points wise.

I think im going to do a 2700k system, already have an oldish MSI P67 GD65 board, and stick 4 decent gpu cards in.

Probably cheaper than a 3930k system and 1 or 2 gpu cards.
