I find myself in need of recommendations on a new FPS game to play. Now I'm not normally a big fan of these games but I do like the occasional one. So I was hoping I could get some advice from all of you!

The last FPS I played and enjoyed was Far Cry. Played Crysis but that wasn't such a great game, Half Life and Half Life 2 weren't my cup of tea, Doom 3 wasn't anywhere near as good as the originals (yes I'm going back a bit here!), FEAR was alright and that about sums it up.

So... It looks like the Battlefields are good games so is Modern Warfare 2 or Bad Company 2 better? Single player is more important as any mp games I'll suck at and will be a side note for me. And I've just noticed Modern Warfare 2 is Call of Duty not Battlefields which should help give you an indicator how often I play these games :D

Ta all for any and all help you may give!

STALKER is absolutely amazing but it's also very different to most other shooters & very much a marmite game - given your track record you might hate or love it.
My favorite is the most recent, Call of Pripyat.

I'd say if you really like single player FPS you have to play through the following really

COD modern warfare 1+2
Soldier of fortune 2
Jedi knight 2: Jedi outcast (starts as a pure fps, then gives you the choice of fps or 3rd person)
Unreal 2
AVP 1+2 (if you cant stand the graphics on 1, try 2 as even though they are aged, they arent too bad and its still dripping with atmosphere)
New AVP for the marine campaign - expensive for what it is though
Serious Sam HD (first and second encounters) - mindless fun
Painkiller black edition - mindless fun

Portal!!

and another vote for the stalker series :)

Modern Warfare 1 also has a decent SP, and the MP certainly outmatches MW2 :p

Now the snooker is over and I have a break at work I can finally respond!

Stalker: Had a look at that but a little bit unsure. It describes itself as a "survival FPS" and given my dislike of Doom I'm not sure if that would be more of the same kind of thing.

Jedi Knight 2 and AVP1+2 - forgot to say, played these, liked the AVP predator and alien campaigns but not the marine. I don't think I like survival style FPS, I get too jumpy :p Jedi Knight is fun once you get lightsabers!

Bioshock 2: I tried the first, couldn't stand it, another survivalist type game I'm not a fan of, although I did play it in an RPG frame of mind.

Was it one of the CoDs that had that famous Normandy landing level? I played that one and have to say really enjoyed it, I could enjoy running around spraying machine guns or using long distance sniper shots without having zombies or people teleporting in behind me and making my over sensitive reflex action kick in!

After having a look on Steam at MW2 I was put off by the £39.99 price tag so that's out. May have a gander at CoD4 though.

Thanks for all the replies btw!

The CoD games are all good (to varying degrees). Normandy landing was CoD2, so you'll want Call of Duty Deluxe (the original plus expansion pack), the two modern warfare games and perhaps World at War (which was made by a different developer, probably the least popular of the 6 games).

Personally I loved Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway as well, also set in WW2 but with more of a focus on storyline. Not quite as intense but the squad commands add a bit of variety and it is vastly superior to the earlier BiA games.

Medal of Honour series maybe also worth a look, although the most recent (Airborne) was a bit of a letdown. I loved Pacific Assault but a lot disagree.

As mentioned by James J, the Serious Sam HD games and Painkiller Black Edition are very very good if you just want some laid back blasting, they are probably the closest modern games to Doom1/2 in terms of huge monster rushes and blatant traps (you know... items just sat in the middle of a room that trigger rushes when picked up!).

Was that actually any good really? It kinda crept up under everyones radar, didnt really have much of a launch and I havent heard about it again since this thread lol

It was largely criticised due to its multiplayer because the previous title's multiplayer was held in such high regard.
Personally, I'm not in the least bit interested in multiplayer and thought the single player was a pretty good effort (I'd say 8/10).
The biggest thing for me that separates good and bad fps is the feel of the weapons/gunplay and I think Wolfenstein got this just right.

I also liked Wolfenstein quite a lot. Another good, basic but solid shooter. My favourite game of 2009.
