Basically, my friend has asked me to put together a gaming rig for him. I like to think I have a decent idea of where to start, but I was just wondering if you guys have any recommendations/improvements on this system?

As I said, the system is pretty much for gaming, with occasional design work (pretty much all 2d/flash sort of thing) and budget is around £1000. He's happy to overclock a bit, but not extreme overclocking.

As the system wont be built for a few weeks yet, I'll most likely hold out to see how the new ATI cards are, just using the 470 as a price guide more than anything

Cheers!

you can drop the psu to a 650w model, as you wont be able to do sli with that motherboard, 650w will be more than enough for that spec.

As above,, or go for the Evo version of the mobo to allow future SLI/xfire
Also Id change the RAM as Im not 100% sure that stuffs compatible with the new Intel stuff, the GSkill stuff is quite good, or the always trusty Corsair
