I`ve currently got an Intel e7500 and I`m looking to upgrade to something faster. I`ve got my eye on the AMD Phenom 2 965 at the moment. I know that the Intels are better for gaming, but they are also a hell of a lot more expensive. So could any of you fine gentlemen tell me whether this cpu would be much of an upgrade from the one I`ve got now? And are the Intel I5 and I7 worth all the extra moolah?

The 965 would be a big improvement over the E7500.

For the price it is does look good, would you be re-using you memory.

Edit: Welcome to the forums :)

I would look at the i3 for a bang for buck gaming rig.

I wouldn't be swapping out mobo and chip for that 965 either,

Get a Q6600 and clock it.

Thanks for the reply, but my memory is ddr2 and the mobo`s for the new chip use ddr3, so no i wont be able to re-use it.
I`ve just been looking at prices again, and the I7 is so much more expensive I think I`ll stick with the phenom. And the only quad core I5 has a slower clock speed than my dual core.
I hadnt thought about the I3, I`ll have a look

You can still use your DDR2 memory with the 965 or 955, but with i3, i5 & i7 you will need ddr3.

This will clock to 4ghz and be an awesome gaming rig.

Don't buy a new mobo and get a phenom when you can keep your existing mobo and get a Q6600

easyrider would I see much of an improvement in performance if I bought the I3 530?
I used to upgrade my computer every year, but found I wasnt getting much of a performance increase compared to the money I was spending. If the increase isnt that great I would rather spend a few more quid and get more of an increase.

So the I7 and I5 chips are faster even though they run at slower clock speed? And is it worth getting a quad over a dual since most games still dont fully support multiple cores?

The Phenom 2 965 is only £135 at the minute, the only comparable Intel cpu is the I5 630 and thats a dual. Which do you guys think would be faster in games?

And is a core I7 860 faster than a core I5 650 even though the I7 runs at a slower clock speed?

Hi, welcome to the forums.

I've got an AMD 965 BE running on an Asus crosshair 3 board, clocked to 3.8 GHZ and its a cracking set-up. I was faced with the same decision as you not so long ago and obviously opted with the AMD, I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Is the E7500 overclocked? If not it should be able to hit around 4Ghz and would give you a decent performance boost. I really would'nt be building a new rig now, especially a Intel one with Sandybridge coming out at the end of this year. 1156, the socket i3/i5 uses, will be killed off when Sandybridge launches and i really don't see the point in going from one dead end socket to another.

At the moment its running at stock speed. I suppose I could just overclock it till the new sockets come out. I have a gigabyte motherboard and easytune 6 looks easy to use so I might just go for it. Maybe push it to 3.5 or something not too drastic. I play a lot of ARMA 2 which is a very CPU intensive game so hopefully it`ll give me a bit of a boost till I can get something better.
I`ve just looked at a CPU comparison and the slowest i7 was faster than all the I5`s and the AMD`s and is still in my price range, but like some of you have said, the sockets will be defunct later this year or next so I think I`ll wait.
Thanks everyone for the advice.
