Hello

I've been told this is the place to post my budget and see what you lot can come up with!

I did already have a build in mind but was told you could possibly push a little extra out of my budget or even suggest better alternatives. I'm only building the tower so no peripherals needed.

Budget is about £1350 (Maybe a little more if its worth it) Also this has to include things like pre braided cables and extra fans if needed. Going for a black and blue design if you could accommodate. (You don't have to include these in you specs but just remember I need abit left over for them)

It will be used mainly for Gaming but, It will also be used for encoding and a little video editing as I've started getting into this abit recently and this is one reason why I'm upgrading as my current computer does not have the power to encode as same time as gaming and also takes ages to render things. This is where I may need an i7 but I will let you guys decide as you probably know allot more than I do.

Three things I will mention that I do want is 1) I'd like to use the HAF X as I don't think there is a better Air Cooling case out there and 2) Atleast a 120GB SSD no smaller please 3) Would like to overclock to around 4.6/4.8Ghz so a decent cooler needs to be included.

Another thing I'd like you advice on aswell please. I currently have a EVGA 480 GTX and a Corsair 750 Watt PSU, would you get another 480 and better PSU (I know there quite hard to come by but I'm sure its possible) and go SLI aswell as upgrading PSU. Or would you wait till the new 6xx cards of Nvidia are released. (Don't want ATi for my own reasons no arguments please) Main focus is for Battlefield 3 and I would like to play on the best settings If I'm spending this much on a computer and not sure if the 480 can do it alone.

Anyway I think I've included all I need to, If theres and question please feel free to ask and I look forward to what you come up with.

Steve

Did you need an operating system?

As for SLi'ing GTX480's, you need a much beefier PSU, something like 900w+

Nope no Operating System needed, please feel free to include a better PSU if you think Sli 480's will be a good choice.

Thanks

So I have included a Gold rated 1K watt PSU and another GTX480 for SLI.

I know you liked the HAFX case, but the Raven is better - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFmbodtTq1o

The fastest Sandybridge CPU and a Gen3 motherboard that will take Ivybridge CPU's and will then be PCI-E3.0 compatible too.

i'd start with something like this. should work great with your black and blue theme you wanted.

i have not included a cooler, graphics card or power supply because im really not sure what would be best there.

the raven is arguably the best air cooled case out there because of its 90 degree motherboard mounting

beaten by stulid again. however, do you thin its worth holding out till the next gen cards are available because a single 480 is still pretty powerful
also, im very surprised at the recommendation of the OCZ SSD as its still giving users BSOD's despite OCZ's claims to have fixed it

also, stulid, wat would you recommend fan wise to keep the silver arrow in the black/blue theme (other than a pot of paint)

Did you expect anything less?

GTX480's in sli are fast as ****, they wont become slow because some newer card comes out.

Up there with SLI GTX580's - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/310?vs=308

No idea, because the silverstones have a round plastic fan frame, so finding something to fit and thats the right colour I would say is impossible.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys, not sure on the Raven but I'm going to have a watch of the video Stulid provided :)

with me being the worlds slowest typer, no :(

ok, fair enough. also i ve just realised that if the OP wants to upgrade later he could sell the 480's off for a small fortune because they will only be rarer

i take it you mean the thermalright ones. i figure the black fans in the bottom of the raven are perfect.

i'm sure someone round here did a fantastic guide to painting fans. probably in the cases section or the project subforum of the cases section

Just watched the video and I'm abit undecided. They said they had problems installing a graphics card in the lower PCI-E slot as it collided with the Hard drives and they couldnt actually get it to fit. Also I know they probably rushed it but it looked a little untidy with the wires from PSU showing but im sure there are better examples out there.

Also noticed you specced the MSI Motherboard reading some of you other suggestions for other users you recommend the Asrock Extreme 4, just wondering if there's any major difference in the boards.

Reaper also mentioned the SSD you recommended is causing BSOD's?

The case neatness depends on how tidy you are, for example,

Heres another vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGMbOKVzeEo&feature=player_embedded

The MSI board is a Gen3 so will take Ivybridge CPU's and will then take future PCI-E3.0 next gen cards.

As for OCZ drives giving BSOD, they did but the latest Firmwares have sorted them.

This is an FT02 with a MSI board

Ok well thanks for the builds Stulid and Reaper its definitely give me some ideas and I'm part way through the second video you linked me and I have to say its already growing on me :p would have to be black I think though.

Thanks again

Steve

Which closed loop water cooler would you suggest? Also I posted in another thread earlier the Venomous X Black edition just wondering your thoughts on that or If I were to stick to air cooler should it just be the Silver arrow?

The Antec Kuhler 620 is better than a Corsair H60.

The Antec Kuhler 920 is better than a Corsair H70 and H80.

Cant find a review for the Venomous X Black edition.

It will be doing well to be better than the Silver Arrow though.

I'd highly recommend the VX or the Silver Arrow over the closed liquid units. The 920 is the only one that can match the above two but rely on fans that are twice as fast and as such it is a very loud unit. It is also more expensive.

Hey

Just wondering if you know anything about the problem where graphics cards with the heat pipe design are having problems in the Fortress/Raven. Found a few threads on it now and its giving me second thoughts on the case as the 480's I would be running use heat pipes.

Heres one thread I found there were others but didn't want to go back and find them again as I've read a lot of posts.

Have you heard anything like this or can anyone with the case confirm it?

Steve

Yeh I had a read at that thread and he says cards at full load are about 90 degrees, which i guess is about right considering its the 480 which runs hot already and being pretty close to each other. Guess the only thing to do is try but would be nice if someone could post here letting me know they run or have run the set up with no problems for peace of mind. :)
