Needed to buy a new gaming laptop, went through the usual research, Dell XPS M1730, Alienware etc, almost settled for an Asus W90, but with the endless delays, decided upon this:-

Toshiba Qosmio X300-14U

Intel Xtreme X9300 core 2 Quad @ 2.53ghz
4gb 1066 DDR3
Twin 512mb 9800m GTS Gfx
Single 9400m GS Desktop Gfx
Twin 320gb Hitachi 7200 rpm drives
1680x1050 display

Its as powerful as it is ugly!

Interesting points to note, when you switch on for the first time it asks you if you want windows 32bit or 64bit installed. This takes a little while to install, around 15-20 mins, but nice to have the option, and easy to reinstall/change your mind.

So far everything is running sweet, Installing nhancer allowed me to make the most of the onboard graphics for the various games (team fortress 2, WoW, CSS etc etc.) I play.

All I need to do now is work out how to overclock it

xD

Nice, looks a beast. Do they give you options on the colour trim?

There's a lot to be said for gaming laptops when you travel etc, I know I can't do without my M1530 when away with work, etc. Pfft work laptops are always crap aren't they.

No, sadly no options, I think all I can do is strip down and airbrush.

It is the devils spawn of a colour scheme

I needed a laptop to take away with me when I travel, which is pretty regularly as I find myself missing too many raids etc. Lugging a 22 inch monitor and Tai Chi case just isnt an option!

Yup, know that feeling. Have got far too many scrawps on both my car and case from dragging them around.

Are those some meatier laptop speakers on it as well? I remember seeing a Qosmio with mini subwoofer underneath before that looked funky - it's always nice when you can hear game noises over the cooling fans.

The fans are quite noisy, the speakers are Harmon kardon x4 plus a subwoofer underneath. Sound is not bad at all for a laptop, but as I shall mostly be using a f4tality headset, not a major prio.

It amazes me the FPS these things are capable of tho, quite impressive.

Loving the specs & if you have the money which it seems you do then Good Luck to you.:)
What does it get in 3D 06 ?

Cant get 3dm 06 or vantage to complete a run without crashing, which is not great.

Probably something to do with the "Toshiba only" Drivers.

That is a beast of a machine - particularly like how it's got the X9300 cpu!!!
Mind if I ask how much you managed to get it for?

i tried to convince the wife to get one of these when her laptop broke, think it looks ace :)

on a side note, do you find your pipes kink when you close the side on the tai chi?

Yes, but I always leave the door ajar until I can relocate it.

Price paid was £2099 with free delivery

I am sure a google will reveal the source

;-)

If I had the cash I'd get the Alienware m17x announced the other day. Apparently Dell are selling it directly.

You can spec it with a quad core q9300, up to 2 1gig gtx280m's in sli, 1tb of hard disk space, and 1920x1200 17" screen. It's also a magnesium alloy chassis. The only problem is to order it from Dell Ireland fully loaded is over 5000 euro!!!

Yeah, and not as fast as the Asus w90 alledgedly

Which if they ever ship it is a mere 2800 euro

Got the Dell XPS M1730 and its a beast. It weighs a ton and runs everything fine. That pair of cards has more stream units than the dell and 2 extra cores. The only issus i got is that it feels slower when using batery, which is to be expected

Going back to be repaired tomorrow, got sick of it crashing during games with a driver fail or bsod.

Tried genuine Nvidia whql drivers with same results, so it must be a hardware fault.
