Hey, Just been upto my local pc shop today to see about setting up a new system and im looking for some advice. Basically i want a machine that can run pretty much any pc title out there and also been keeping an eye on the future crysis game which looks amazing! currently i have been spec'd a machine with the following :

AMD Athlon64 X2 5000
2GB DD2 RAM
600 watt Power Supply
160GB Hard Drive
Gainward Geforce 8800GTX (768MB) Videocard
20X DVD-Rewriter
XP Home SP2

This system will be hooked up to my new Samsung 20" 206bw monitor which i recieved today from OC :) which looks amazing!! Im not really upto date with good machines and specs so any info regarding this set-up will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome to the OcUK Forums!

Firstly regarding your spec. The high end gaming CPUs at this moment in time are definitely the Core 2 Duos over the AMD's.

If your looking for high end gaming performance you will be wanting to look ate a Core 2 Duo system.

XP Pro over XP Home is recommended. I will go make you a spec.

What sort of budget are we looking at and will you be building this machine yourself or would you like a pre built one?

Whoever specced you that is a muppet. You don't want AMD as it isn't a patch on the new Intels and the new Intels are cheaper. If you want to play Crysis in all its glory on that expensive 8800GTX you need DX10 and that is only available in Vista. I suggest you buy your stuff from OcUK :D

You haven't given a budget but off the top of my head I would say

E6400
DS3 or P5B
GeIL 2GB Ultra PC2-6400
8800GTX
600W PSU [Seasonic or Corsair seem to be most popular at the moment].
Windows Vista

I'd give you a more comprehensive list but it is 1:40am and I cannae be bothered :p

Someone will happily give you a nice shiny spec + price. I suggest you give us a budget first though!

Hey guys thanks for your replys :) well regarding my budget im looking at around £950 left caus ive just spent £200+ on my samsung monitor. im not good at building things so deffinatly has to be already built lol, any info regarding a system from OC will be much appreciated as i want to get up and running asap, dont want ma monitor going to waste ;) thanks again.

You know it really isn't that hard to build a PC. The hard part is finding the right hardware and that's where us lot come in! Physically putting it together is a piece of urine.

If you did get stuck, we're here again to help :p

Still it is up to you :D

thanks for the advice but id really prefere a ready made unit m8, its probably just down to lazyness really but id rather someone else spec'd and built me a gaming rig than me trying to sort through the pc mine field lol ;) my budget is £950 and id really like the 8800gtx in it as its DX10 plus i wont need to upgrade for a while again :)

This is a nice pre-built system from OcUK, its not EXACTLY what I would recommend but its very close, it comes pre-overclocked too :D It will be much better than the one you were speced by your local PC shop.

Thanks for the link there m8 :) can you tell me if this system will be able to run the crysis game? i really want something thats gunna be able to handle the next wave of games and something that wont need upgraded again in the near future :) dont have an endless budget, wish a did lol... that system looks tempting tho!

Yep will definitely play Crysis and any game for the next 3 years I would have thought :)

On current games like FEAR would this system play on all high graphical settings? also would Crysis run smoothly on high settings, my monitor is the samsung 20" 206bw so would be playing all my games at 1680X1050 res.. how long do you think this system would realistically keep me going? like a said the wife wouldnt be to happy with me spending all the cash on a pc regularly lol ;)

We can't really tell if it will play crysis smoothly, because crysis
is not out yet.
I think that the hi def trailors have been recorded with a GTX.
But I'd put my money on the GTS playing crysis smoothly with
mid-high settings.

Crysis won't play on that resolution on maximum because its only a 320mb GTS. Idealy it is a GTX for your budget but thats not possible with the pre-built systems ( unless you pay for this one ) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-032-OK

If you were willing to build it yourself then you could get a better deal here.

so my monitor resolution will be draining the gfx card if its the 8800gts card on 1680x1050? i really dont want to build my own rig much rather it was just ready to plug and go :) does that second OC system have what i need to be pretty future proof to play crysis and games coming out in the future? also if it did need upgrading later down the line what upgrades would i be looking at really, can that system run 2 8800gtx if it was really needed? thanks again for all your inputs ;)

The 320MB GTS can only handle resolutions of up to about 1280x1024 or it starts to run out of memory.

It doesn't actually say if the mobo is SLI capable, if your worried about that then you can possibly ring sales and they may be able to make small modifications to the setup of the prebuilt systems.

Would be good to learn to build your own pcs for the future but I understand you might be worried about playing with £1000's worth of hardware for a first try :D

Yeah thats it m8, dont want to break or damage things when i want a good system, cant afford to spend more if i break things lol. im gunna go for a system with the 8800gtx as it seems really good from reviews plus it should last a good while? im seriously considering this pre-built set

can you tell me if this is worth the money, it looks great on paper but will it last me in the long run? also i havent got into the whole xp vs vista so i know very little bout vista, is it stable now? also i have some dell speakers that i will be using till i can afford some decent spec ones will these just plug into the back of this system along with the current power lead i have at home? do different power supplys need various power leads? thanks again folks ;)

well the case knocked 11C off both the mobo and cpu

it is a very good case for cooling

200mm fan on the top at variable speed is the best thing i have ever seen in a case :P

I think you drastically overestimate how easy it is to damage computer components. Provided you're not an idiot and throw them against a wall or something, or play with a van de graaf generator and touch your motherboard, it's childs play to put a PC together.

But hey, if you want to pay more money for a less capable system, that's your business. In that case, the spec above would be very good. If building from parts there'd be a few changes to that spec, and you'd save around £200 (maybe you could get some nice speakers with that). The system above with a 6600, 2GB RAM and an 8800GTX should last at least 2-3 years, doing well with games.

The computer will come with a power lead for plugging into the wall (standard 13A 3 pin kettle lead) if that's what you're asking about. The speakers probably use 3.5mm mini-jack plugs, which would plug into that pre-build fine.

is there software that allows you to control the fans on the case? would that system im thinking of getting just be a matter of plug and play, i mean like i wouldnt have to adjust settings or that when i was playing games to keep it all cool?

thanks for the info m8, glad to hear this set-up will last for a good few years!

yeah the end of the speakers are just a small jack which plug into the green coding point at the back of the pc so that should be fine :)

il prob be going for better ones later on when i have more money saved..
