Hi, hoping to build a new pc in the coming weeks, I'll be using case/heatsink/psu and soundcard from my current pc and was thinking about this setup:

not sure about the raptor are they worth the extra and is it worth getting an x38 mobo for PCIe 2.0 would like it to be as future proof as possible.

Any comments?

Raptors are overrated in my opinion, you can pick up faster 500Gb hard drives for half the price.
Change the RAM to Geil on this weeks offer.
And how powerful is your current PSU.

It's not worth the extra for an X38 board. They offer little benefit, especially for overclocking.

I'd get Geil rather than that Corsair since it's cheaper and should perform identically.

I'd also skip the Raptor. For that much money you could have a RAID 0 array of Seagate 7200.10 250 GB and be pulling 160-190 MiB/s transfer.

Instead of the raptor how about (Samsung SpinPoint T 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM) thats on this week only offer also a friend of mine said there a bit quieter than the Seagates.

a) I'd second the Geil suggestion above by BillyTheImpaler and b) If you're using 64 bit vista (and probably even if you're not) I'd stick another 2gb in for another 40-odd quid.

It seems silly to spend over £150 on a CPU and then skimp on £40 when you could double your ram.

IMO Raptors are over priced and noisy....and yes I have one :(

Thinking....your CPU is this @ £159.79 inc VAT
Do OEM chips come with coolers these days?

EDIT: Duh...I just seen....I'll be using case/heatsink/psu

But is 4gb even needed at the moment?. I don't know if anything has changed lately but when i was researching a while ago most people were saying 4gb was a waste of money especially with XP.

Welcome to the forums BTW (OP) :).

4gb is a waste with xp. But vista 64bit runs a lot smoother with 4gb. its the way data is handled in 64 bit it requires more space for the data but it runs faster. hence having a lot faster pc with an extra 2gb of ram.

Playing a game like crysis or alan wake on 4gb of ram i expect to run a lot smoother. they look to be memory hogs.

Also dont get corsair memory because its overpriced and the rma will take a minumum of 6 weeks as ist from america and they seem to take ages!

If i were to go with 4gb of ram would it be better to get 2 x 2gb instead of 4 x 1gb are some motherboards fussy about having all 4 slots occupied?

Any one got any advice on the ram? I'm hoping to order the parts within the next 2 weeks and get it up and running in time for Crysis and Cod 4.

Cheers

The Ip35 Pro, and indeed all P35 'boards are quite tolerant of having all slots filled. DDR2 in 2 x 1 GiB sets are ridiculously cheap ATM. As such IMO it would be more prudent to get two of the Geil sets.
