hey guys im new here so go easy on me.
not built a pc in about 3 years now so all the new tech is abit baffling. finally switching back to pc gaming after having countless consoles die on me.

im currently using
amd x2 6800+
asus m2n sli delux mobo
2 8800gts in sli
some generic 1000w psu
in a cooler master 922 HAF

its not the best and rather dated now so i want to build something future proof so heres what im looking at

mobo: Asus Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX
cpu: AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1100T Black Edition 3.30GH
gfx: **either** 2 GTX 560Ti in sli or GTX 580 Matrix Platinum which would be best?
memory: undecided any suggestions?
sound: cheap 5.1 card as ill only be using it with my astro's
going to be using my old psu, case and disk/hard drives for now. may get a small ssd for windows.
any suggestions on the above set up? anything i should swap out? as i say ive been out of the game for a while so all the new stuff is baffling me.
any help is great guys thanks.
 
What's your budget for the upgrade?
What's the manufacturer of your existing PSU?
Are your existing optical and hard drives SATA or IDE?
 
It's quite important to know the make of the PSU, especially the OEM (Original Manufacturer). I wouldn't trust a 1000W Crapola with anything expensive. PSU quality varies immensely, they could just be a disaster waiting to happen, or power your rig for years.

The case is good at least, and your drives should be compatible, so if you are happy to reuse, you can get a kick ass system for £800.

hey thanks for the reply that set up seems pretty nice, however id prefer a nvidia card (mainly for pshyX, i currently have 3 8800gts's in my pc and read somewhere a while ago you could run pshyX with ati cards if u use a nvidia card in a spare pci slot, is that true?

Pointless....absolute nightmare to get the drivers to work (believe me I tried on my previous system)

Only 2 games worth playing the use FIZZZZZX are Batman Arkham Asylum and Mafia 2...and it add's about 1% extra enjoyment to the experience....

....seriously you dont wanna bother mixing AMD with Nvidia purely for FIZZZZZZX
 
Multiple choices :) Corsair TX...V2 are good units, and not too expensive. Enermax, Seasonic, Antec. Modular cost more. OCZs look decent (Z-850). Single card, you can get away with a Antec TP-650, TX650V2.

NVidias are good, more expensive. 560ti, 570.
 
could you hold out 3-6months(well 4-6 months if you're set on nvidia)? the next gen of cards are due out then, amd end of the year/start of next year while from last report nvidia wouldn't be this side of christmas.
 
its gonna be close to christmas when i start the build anyway, but i dont really want to wait and then spend stupid amounts on a new card. im thinking of getting a gtx570 which is in my budged then further down the line if i really need to ill either sell it and get a new one or just sli it.
at the min im using two 8800gts and they are holding up quite well so i can imagine the 570 should hold up just as well over time.
@stulid whats the difference between those two psu's? sorry i dont really know much about them at all.
 
why are people thinking that the new cards will cost £600+ or something like that? 1 guy on here who was set on getting the asus 580 said that the new cards would cost £800(wtf??? if you buy the dual gpu one maybe).

if the 4xx to 5xx is anything to go by then you should be able to get 580 performance equaling 6xx card for about the price that the 570 costs at the moment.

New hardware always cost big bucks when its released, especially when theres no competition around, the GTX580 was £400+ for a reference design when it came to market. Now you can get one for £330 for a reference design as production costs come down and competition gets stiffer.
 
The new cards are gonna be significantly faster. So either they'll be more expensive, or the current gen will decrease in price.

The 570 is a good card, If you can afford one. Better value than a 580.

Wait until the last week before ordering, especially around Christmas. New AMD CPU. Although I have a feeling you'll stick with Intel, Intel could decrease prices if Bulldozer is competitive. Dunno exactly when next gen GPUs come out though, but it's something to bear in mind (price decrease / more performance).

thing is, im not a "serious" gamer any more. its just something i do 3 o4 times a week for an hour or so.
if i was still playing 8hours a day id be buying the best of everything i could. for now i just want a pc that will play stuff the next year maybe 2 has to offer.

yes but the 570 replacement isn't goint to cost £600+nor is the 580 replacement goint to cost £800.

as has been the case for the past few years the top one will be around the £400 mark, the one below that around the £300 mark. obviously the pre-overclcoked/third party cooler etc will be more, but also per usual the rpices should fall a bit shortly after release(unless you have what happened with the think was it 5870 where the price stayed high for longer then usual due to nvidia not releasing their cards much later than initiall planned).

would still think the 580 level performance card would be the 6xx card thats sub £300.
 
Depends on wafer and production costs, these are rumored to be on a die shrink so the R+D and tooling from the fabs just gets passed down the line to the consumer.
