Hi guys

i need some advice with a gaming rig that i am thinking of getting from OCUK
primarily the pc will be used for gaming with a little bit of streming, recording videos and so on. atm my monitor res is 2560x1080 but i am planning to upgrade to the lg curved superwidescreen at a later stage,
i was thinking of going for the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-446-OE&groupid=43&catid=2474&subcat=2481, but i will be changing a lot of the components as i am going for a black/red theme,
so far i have come up with this,
YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 980 DirectCU II OC Strix 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £499.99
1 x Asus Maximus VII Formula Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £254.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Green 6TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD60EZRX) £189.95
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £169.99
1 x Corsair Gaming CGK70 RGB Backlight Keyboard Black Cherry MX Red Switches (CH-9000068-UK) £139.99
2 x Samsung 256GB SSD 850 PRO SATA 6Gbps 3D NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-7KE256BW) £134.99 (£269.98)
1 x Corsair HX750i Full Modular Digital Power Supply (CP-9020072-UK) £119.99
1 x NZXT H440 Mid Tower Case - Black £89.99
2 x Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CMY8GX3M2A2133C11R) £79.99 (£159.98)
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £77.99
1 x Corsair Gaming CGMM200 Extended Gaming Surface (CH-9000086-WW) £24.98
Total : £2,015.52 (includes shipping : £14.75).

i no i can change some parts to lower the price but i am also going for aesthetics, also would it be better to go for the corsair 540 over the nzxt due to the higher airflow, i do plan to go sli and watercool at a later stage when i upgrade my monitor

all help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

The Phanteks case is excellent if you intend on going for watercooling later on. It has a stealth cover for the psu, similar to the H440. The Black version is out of stock at the moment. I personally think the White case looks nicer.

If you plan on watercooling the gpu's as well, then maybe look at the EVGA cards, as they don't void your warranty for removing the cooler.

The GTX 970 is far better value than the GTX 980. It is about 10% less performance wise, but £200 cheaper. The Gigabyte G1 supposedly overclocks very well.

I swapped the 2 x 256GB SSD for a single 512GB Crucial MX100. It is a very nice drive, and it is about £125 cheaper than the 2 x Samsung drives.

You are better with 2 x 8GB Ram sticks.

An i7 should help you with Streaming and any editing/rendering.

The EVGA is a superior psu to the Corsair.

Do you plan on using the stock Intel cpu cooler for now ?

hey thanks for the response, for the gpus i would like to stick with asus as i prefer the looks of them over the g1, and 970 in sli is def something i'm considering.
also for the cooler i was planning to go for the corsair h105
the spec you have chosen is a very good option to go for aswell.

all other opinions are welcomed

The 970 cards are definitely better value for money. The Asus Strix is a good card though, and it has the zero fan mode which is nice when you are just browsing the net etc. It is priced the same as the Gigabyte G1 as well.

I have made a few amendments to the spec

I am going with the forumla over the other range of rog boards for the looks, also the same reasoning with the ssd's, planning for one to be for the OS and the other for games.

Going for the 760t as i believe the airflow is good and the psu will also fit the colour scheme well.

or are they any changes that i should make?

If you are happy to spend the 'extra' on some parts, then it looks fine. You can also get a set of Red cables for the psu to finish the build off if you want.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Generation 2 Sleeved Cable Kit (AXi / AX / HX / TXM) - Red £64.99
1 x Corsair Generation 2 Sleeved 24 Pin Cable (AX) - Red £14.99
Total : £89.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

You could also add some LED's if you want to light the inside of the case up a bit. There are a few different colours to choose from. The one below is just an example.

YOUR BASKET
1 x BitFenix Alchemy Premium Modding LED Strip - Aqua White 50cm £29.99
Total : £32.27 (includes shipping : £1.90).

quick question

should i get x99 over the z97, i have looked at the figures and its approx £220 more to go x99. also consider that the increase is price is not a problem.

It wouldn't cost you that much more, although I am guessing you have your eye on the £360 Asus Rampage board ? :p

If you went with this Gigabyte board, or the cheaper Gaming 5 then it isn't a huge difference.

At the end of the day though, it won't give you any extra performance in gaming. The i5 is still pretty fine for that. As you are doing a bit of streaming and video recording then an i7 is a good choice.

I guess budget isn't an issue though, otherwise you would have gone with my cheaper spec in the first place :D

If spending the money isn't a problem then I am not going to say don't go with X99. I personally don't think it is worth it, but at the end of the day it is your call :)
