Dear oCUK Community,

I am an 18 year old student who has never had the oppurtunity to play the latest game to their full potential, I am one of these people who can either not play the game at all, or just about play the game if I set the video settings to LOW. :P So I am deciding to build my own computer, I have never done it before so it would be useful if you guys could point me in the direction of some nice "How To" guides maybe?

Anyway, so I would like you guys to put together a rig for me on a budget of around £700, but I can maybe stretch that budget as I most definitely will need to, because I need absolutely everything, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

I have been looking at many posts similar to the one I am writing now, and you all seem to ask whether or not the poster will be overclocking, I have no experience of overclocking, but would be intrigued to find out how to do it, and then im sure I would be overclocking.

Well thats all for now... If I think of something i've missed then i'll add it later,

Reply a-way!!

DX10, decent overclocking potential, sexy case, nice and quiet, quality peripherals.

Cool...

Is there much difference between a 2.4GHz C2D and a 2.0GHz C2D or not? o.O

Would that spec be able to play the likes of BF2 on HIGH Quality video?

Apart from the latter being almost £50 cheaper, not a great deal tbh. Especially if you overclock it making use of the nice HSF I added.

Oh yes.

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£70.49)

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)
(£70.49)

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)
(£58.74)

Logitech S96 PS/2 Optical Wheel Mouse Black - OEM
(£5.28)

Logitech Deluxe Keyboard (Black) - OEM
(£6.45)

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715)
(£75.19)

OcUK Value Hanns-G HW173D 17" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black
(£90.46)

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU
(£29.36)

Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
(£21.14)

Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink
(£32.89)

OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£176.24)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
(£63.44)

Total : £715.38

8800 GTS is much faster than the 8600 GTS, and the CPU is clockable up to about 3GHz.

I'd see if it might be possible to save money on the monitor and keyboard and just grab a CRT\keyboard second hand. I've got 3 nice CRT monitors that all cost less than £8. LCD is definitely nicer and more convenient these days, but people are literally throwing away very good CRTs. I guess it depends if you have the space though.

And I find the mouse much more important than keyboard for gaming.

You could then put the saved £s into a better video card.

Just a thought.

Is it easy to overclock? What are the drawbacks?
Yes. Drawbacks - overheating/instability, in which case you either revert to lower speeds or buy better cooling. Put simply, it's generally a waste of money not to.

Edit - The keyboard I chose is indeed a luxury item, and can easily be dropped. :)

So that Cooling Fan would keep the CPU from overheating for sure?

So I should just go for the 1.8Ghz C2D and overclock it...

The HSF is very good, so yes.

The E4300 would certainly be a sensible option.

with melbourne720's spec i'd drop the Noctua NH-U12F for the artic cooler masslac specified then use the money from that to get the OcUK Value Hanns-G HC194D 19" LCD Monitor - Silver/Black £115.14

Difference...

What is the difference between that 19" monitor and the one first specified? They are more or less the same price

Also... when building the computer I will not need any extra cables or anything will I? They all come with their relevant hardware?

Let me go find all them pieces together and see what it looks like. :p

As far as how 2 guides, as long as you get things in roughly the right order you should be fine. I think I normally go for:-

PSU to case.
CPU to mobo
HSF to mobo (does depend on the mobo)
RAM to mobo
mobo into case
HD to case
DVD to case
cards (gfx, pci,etc) to case/mobo
front panel

all the while hooking up the various power and data leads as you go, tying them off with cable ties.

There is a thread on the order people do this in, do a search if you're interested.
