Budget £600 MAX (lower is good)

I think my X1800XT should be fine to use in it for now and can be upgraded at a later date (PCI-E).

Already have a monitor and keyboard etc. I do want a new case though. I hate putting PCs together myself though grrr :(

If you decide you don't want a quad core processor we can always start chopping away at this spec to save money.

Made you two specs, one for £600 and one for well under budget which would serve you well but doesn't come with a lot of the good stuff from the £600 one ie. the Quad core and worse cooling, but still something you may be interested in.

£597.92

Thanks!

Is the quad core worth it? Also is it worth getting 4GB of ram given how cheap it is these days?

Everything future proof for new upgrades?

Is the quad core worth it?
For futureproofing it is, otherwise you won't see many things for the next few months that will use 4 cores. Something like the E6750 is faster at stock, and in dual core games/applications it will be faster than a Q6600.

I guess it is, but if you get 4GB you will have used all your RAM slots, but at the price the RAM is these days it can't hurt (could get 4x1GB for about £105 / £110)

Billys and my spec are nicely futureproofed, both have support for Penyrn processors, however only the P35C-DS3R supports DDR2 and DDR3, so if you migrated to DDR3 from DDR2 and went for the IP35 you'd have to change board. That won't matter however if you don't plan on getting DDR3 for a couple of years when it gets to "decent" prices.

I can afford to spend a little bit more, so do you think it'd be worth doing it to support DD3 in the future?

Part of me is tempted to just buy a full system because I hate putting them together (do the full systems come pre-built?).

1000 gets you a pretty kick-butt system right now. I don't think that anything involving a QX CPU is worth it since they're massively overpriced. Give me a sec and I'll do a 1000ish spec.

This would be most excellent:

You can add or subtract as you will: more HDDs, larger HDDs, more RAM, sound card, etc. It'd run just about any game available today at max.

I'm just feeling a little lazy so if you had the choice which one would you pick from the pre built systems?

Tha above spec does look really good though. Thanks for this input it's good.

I really need to start paying attention to hardware again :)

The difference is hundreds of pounds. At that price If I really didn't feel like building it I'd get a friend or a shop to build it from the parts I'd provide for £50 or so. Heck, I like to assemble rigs for friends. It's goods fun. :p

A GTX is significantly faster than a GTS. However, it's a pretty good spec if you ignore the price. :p

ARGH I know I should put it together myself but mehehehhhhhhh :(

Right i'll do it, hows the cooling going to be? I don't really need a 500GB hard drive and could probably spend another £50-£70 on top of that spec you gave if it's worth it.

I'm going to get a new keyboard and mouse too along with Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, got to be done.

Think i'll need some arctic silver too. All the leads etc going to come with?

Cooling will be quite good. That's the best cooling case combined with the best CPU cooler money can buy. The 320 GB Western Digital AAKS disk is quite good and you wouldn't go wrong to get that. I'm no expert on keyboards and mice but I've heard nice things about the Enermax Aurora keyboard and the Razer DeathAdder mouse. All the necessary cords, plugs, and such will come with it, mostly in with the motherboard.

Do you really need Ultimate? If you don't need the Media Center features of Ultimate you can cut the cost in half and get Home Premium instead.
