New Gaming / Workstation Rig

So, after playing GW2 beta this weekend, I reckon im due an upgrade.

In terms of budget, this is difficult. What Id like is the best value for money system. I could say £1000 but Id pay more if it was worth it. That 'curve', where it gets silly to increase the performance for the cost of it, not worth it.

Please spec me a machine. My current machine will likely remain as is, I will probably only bring my Essence STX soundcard with me but need a full new machine.

In terms of monitor, I will likely go for a 27inch Hazro, so keep that out of the equation - so too any monitor / mouse needs - just a case and its bits.

Fire away, no preference for SB or Ivy - just best value for money for gaming and as a good solid workstation :-)

What do you have at the moment?

Do you need Keyboard/Mouse/OS? Windows 7 64-bit is pretty much what you'll need.

And any reusable hard drives/DVD drives?

Ivy build, Pre-Order on the graphics card cause the Twin Frozr cards are awesome and the 7850 is worth getting over the 7870 because the 7850 is incredibly overclockable, and not worth getting the 7870 as you can likely get similar performance with an overclock on the 7850. :D

Power supply may be a little on the small side (wattage wise) if you want to Crossfire (which the motherboard can do) in the future, you'd likely want to get a 750W.

And Windows 7 is there too, but its out of stock at the moment.

Anyway, if you DON'T need a hard drive and dvd drive, I'd say change the case or get a better motherboard to get some overclocks out of that chip. The cooler you could also change, I think the all in one watercoolers are the **** but thats preference, you may want to go air instead, in which case I'll let someone else contribute as I have little idea about decent air coolers.

If you do, you can use the rest of the budget towards those.

I dont need Windows, I have an enterprise license that I use for my PCs. In terms of keyboard, mouse, no need, ill get elcheapos later for the 'old' machine and keep my trusty 10 year old Dell keyboard and keep my logitech MX1000.

In terms of optical drives, I have 2 - one is giving issues, so will replace that.

I will need an SSD for OS at least, might get something else too for data but exclude that for now. I am really interested in seeing the 'best' combo for motherboard, ram, CPU .... gfx card I might go for a 2nd hand 7970 ... but unsure atm.

Ok, Windows is gone and the SSD is there for the OS. The optical drive I haven't included (do you need two?) That combo of Ram, Mobo and CPU is pretty much the best you can get without spending a bit more. Good luck getting a 7970 in that budget haha :D but I think the 7850 is a very capable graphics card!

Edit: You have said you could go further with your budget if it was worth it - if you were willing to stretch to £1200 you could get a GTX 680 which is pretty much the most wanted graphics card on the planet at the moment :D

Thanks. I might bump up to a 7970 card - not sure - but apart from keyboard (mine is PS2), the rig is complete from what I can tell.
