I've been debating either getting the crucial c300 256gb, or the ocz vertex 2e 240gb drive in 3.5" ff. I read through these forums and keep hearing about a new generation coming out next year, anyone have any info on these as to whether it's worth the wait??

It's the new Intel SSD's. More info here. Up to you if you want to wait or not but there's a chance they will drive down the price of other SSD's when they eventually appear for sale.

Any further info on when the new x25-m series will appear? The last I heard was "not until the new year", and that was back in September...

My system is itching for a nice new 300GB SSD :D

I don't have any dates yet of course but, SandForce is due out with a new controller also; SATA3/6Gb. I think they are aiming for Q1 just like everyone else.

See, I know Sandforce is the latest thing, but I'm not convinced by something that relies on compression to achieve its transfer rates, this is why I'm still undecided between the 2 drives I stated in my first post... I am leaning towards the C300 based on that when intel have a chipset with sata iii in it I will upgrade my main system at that point..

So far, in head to head testing and not just pure benchmarks, the current SF1200 based drives soundly outperform the current Crucial C300s and cost less, GB per GB. I am certain that the SF2000 will increase this performance gap.

even if there wasnt a fuss over new stuff you should still wait till they come down in price, they are WAY overpriced at the moment, especially PCI-E, you're talking £500 or even more for no more than 300GB

What also needs to be done, is an ssd that works with sata but usb 3.0 as well, it would be invaluable to many folk having what is not only their hard drive, but a portable drive they could use with a multitude of devices.

Thought it's still early days for the ssd, im sure we have many great things to come, and it won't be long before sata and usb are maxxed out.

I agree, they are not mature or mainstream yet, but they seem to be improving faster than mechanical hard drives so I expect the will be more mainsteam in a few years. :)

I'm waiting for the new Intel drives. Hopefully the 300GB one has a decent price.

I have no facts to back this up, but I just get the impression that all these other SSD outfits are a bit fly-by-night.

A bit "fly-by-night". Folks like Crucial and OCZ have been around for the best part of a decade (or more) producing top quality memory based products (amongst other things).

There have been teething problems with the roll out of SSD's. But that applies to pretty much every manufacturer. Even the much vaunted Intel released at least one firmware upgrade that "bricked" quite a few peoples SSD's for them!

Quote from oct. 2009

"A firmware update designed to improve performance on Intel SSDs has been pulled by the company following reports that it resulted in unusable devices for some Windows 7 users."
