I'm just about to get a new graphic card on my second PC to replace an aging GTX 285. I've been looking at the 7970 as they are so much cheaper than the 680 but seem to give similar performance.

Is the Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X a good card?

It's a good price this week so thinking about placing an order for it.

Any other suggestions before I press buy?

Thanks!

Went with the 7970 :) I was thinking about the 7950 but as this is a PC my wife is using most of the time I don't want to have to do any tinkering with overclocking profiles and such. Just plug and play.

Thanks for the replies everyone! :)

Heh, damn good price for a 7970. Its a shame Nvidia are such a rip-off

I used to prefer Nvidia just on drivers, but from what I'm reading atm CF and SLI aside there's nothing really in it driver wise.

I usually only go for Nvidia as well. I haven't had a Radeon card since the old 9800 was king, many years ago. But I need something with the power of a 670/680 so thought I would give the radeon another go.

Hopefully it will turn out to be good card!

Just wanted to update and say that the 7970 is great! Can't really notice any difference between my GTX 680 and the 7970!

It's really nice and quiet as well which is a bonus!
