New gpu blue screen

I just purchased an MSI R9 290 Gaming Edition for my PC.
I upgraded from an XFX HD 5870 and before installing the newer 290 I uninstalled the the AMD drivers as shown in this guide below from the AMD website: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx#Win7

I then shutdown the PC and installed the new gpu and installed the required drivers from AMD. After playing a few minutes of skyrim i got a blue screen and this has only happened while in a game.

any suggested actions? (kinda new to this stuff)

System:
Asus sabertooth x58
intel core i7 950 @ stock
12gb g skill ripjawz
MSI R9 290 gaming edition
1x HDD
1x blu ray drive
Corsair TX 650W PSU
Windows 7 64 bit

Honestly i didn't read it in time as it took me completely by surprise and its the first time i've seen one lol.

Anyway, i've just been running Crysis 3 for about 30 minutes with no problems, however msi afterburner has shown that the core clock does not reach the 977Mhz or even the 1007Mhz as stated on the cards product page, the max it reached was 970Mhz with a minimum of 300Mhz, is this normal?

other readings i got:
gpu temperature min: 28 degrees C, max 66 degrees C
Fan speed min: 18 max: 30
gpu usage min: 0 max: 100
memory clock min: 150 max: 1250

Was achieving 60fps throughout.

On a side note, my mouse pointer has gone huge since installing the drivers and i cannot seem to change it back.

PSU should be fine. Try to get the BSOD error code, snap a picture of it next time. That will give us a bit of a clue as to the problem.

ive tried skyrim again for about 15 mins and it ran fine this time. Is there a program i can use to test the gpu until it might get a BSOD?
thanks

downloaded WhoCrashed as suggested and this is what came up:

This was probably caused by the following module: atikmdag.sys (atikmdag+0x277CE)
Bugcheck code: 0xA0000001 (0x5, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
Error: CUSTOM_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\atikmdag.sys
product: ATI Radeon Family
company: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
description: ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver

Is there a fix for this?

I got this a couple times when I was trying to get a stable overclock on my 290. It's just the driver falling over itself as far as I can tell. If it happens again report back though. Shouldn't do.

Played a few more games and ran a few more applications, so far it has not happened again. Everything seems to be stable on MSI kombuster as well.

The only thing still bothering me is the mouse pointer changing to a huge size.
@MjFrosty, did you encounter this mouse pointer problem as well?
