Morning all,

I'm Currently running a

I5 - 2500k @ 4.2ghz(with Titan Fenrir cooler)
MSI P67A GD65 Sandy bridge
AMD HC 5770
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C8 1333MHz Dual-Channel
128gb ssd

How is my current spec fairing against the new components these days?

I play World of warcraft, and would like to start playing some fps in the near future.

I have around £600 to spend initially(now). With another £600 next month.
144
I have a 22" Samsung 940bw monitor atm playing at a res 1440 x 900 res( hoping to add a bigger monitor soon and use this as a second).

Can anyone spec me or advise me which direction I should go?(Been out the loop since i made this system)

Cheers

The core of that system is still fine, the weakest link being the graphics card. An upgrade to a newer card would help more than anything. Also adding an ssd for the os and your most used games/programs.

as setter said, your cpu, ram and board are fine for gaming.

i am running a I7 950 and instead of replacing it i overclocked the CPU from 3ghz to 4ghz and then brought a 970 and have 2 x Samsung evo 840s 250GB drives as well.

does me well for gaming and had no issues, before my 970 i had a Radeon HD 5830. other option is tog et a after market cooler and OC your CPU and get a new GPU

the rest will still do you fine for the time being and save the money

I would add an SSD, new gpu and replace the ram

Something along the lines of a GTX970, 256MB samsung evo and maybe some avexir, corsair or teamgroup 8GB ram @ 1600/1866 mhz

Everyone's suggesting to get a new gpu which I agree with but not a new monitor to pair with it?
My 2p would be new gpu,1440p monitor and 8gb ram.

I recently upgraded from a 2500K to a 4690K, mostly to update aesthetics. I can confirm what everybody here seems to know, the speed increase is not much at all. Good power savings though, but not worth the cost.

I agree with Jony27 too, but I would not go for a 1440p monitor right now. My reasoning is because you said you want to play FPS, and to do so properly you need high frame rates (~120fps). I would recommend waiting ~3 months for a monitor and treat is as a separate purchase as some really nice new ones are coming around end of March! I would suggest:

- 2x4GB ram 2400Mhz, no point in going for slow ram at a similar price. Try and get a low CAS latency. 8GB is the current sweet spot and can be had for ~£60
- Keep your eyes open for a SSD deal, try and get at least another 256GB for games.
- GTX 970 Here is where you need to spend the most to make use of a new monitor later. If you want to do FPS gaming at 1440p get 2 cards. If you are ok with 1080p one will be ok. Alternatively if you can find a deal, you can look at cheap 2x R9 290s and get a FreeSync monitor in March.

This assumes you have a good PSU, if you don't you will need to budget a bit extra if you want 2 GPU's.There are some good PSU calculators available if you search online.

Good hunting!

I would be fine with 1080p.

Most consensus seems to be towards a GTX 970. but which one? Also what ram?

Can anyone specify what exactly I should go for? Would ideally like 2 x 4 gb sticks or 2 x 8 gb sticks.

Best choice for |GTX970 is MSI or ASUS.
MSI has back plate, and I think you can OC it a bit higher then ASUS.
Personally id take ASUS
Ram - Any good DDR3 2133 + / CL10 -
Corsair Domianator or any ram with this spec at good price.
I can't see point to get 16 gb for now, it's better to put this 80 quit to monitor

For the 970 id personally go for gigabyte, the windforce cooler is very quiet and cools very well. Also gigabyte have a very good uk based returns centre.

I'd probably go gigabyte G1 as well.
For ram, don't need anything as fancy as the dominators, plenty of other brands that have the same speed and latency but cheaper.
For 1080p monitor, try a 144Hz one and see for yourself the difference in fps games.

Here you go.
