New GPU for old Opteron 165 system

I'm looking for a relatively cheap way to improve the performance of an Opteron 2.5GHz system, it currently has an ATi X1950XTX and won't play SimCity 5. It's used for playing the Sims 2 and Minecraft/FTB also, which it does fine. Monitor is 1080p so ability to play at native would be a bonus.

I will be upgrading the other components when funds allow but in the meantime it needs a new GPU! :-) i know the rest of the system will hold it back but at least it'll be playable!

Was thinking 7850 or one of the 1GHz 7870's?

Any advice is appreciated :-)

It'll be a few months before I can spring for a new CPU mobo ram psu. I don't really wanna have to buy another GPU so soon :-( so if a better GPU will work with the old board I can carry it over to an i5 later. I did mention in OP that I'll expect the whole system to hold the GPU back anyway hah :-)

Cheers

I'd imagine the CPU would be more of a handicap than Windows 8? :-P

There will be a point where the CPU will limit whatever card you buy. I am on a E8500 and anything more than a 7770/6850 - gtx460 will start to be overkill.

Go for a reasonably priced card between £100-150 which you can take with you when you decide to overhall the mobo/cpu/ram next.

Will there be any issues with PCI express versions?
Won't be able to order til I know someone will be home now, had hoped to get an order in for today but it'll have to wait til I get another day off now! :-( If only couriers delivered on Sundays!

The 7870 1GHz is £164 and the 7870 Tahiti another tenner, but runs hotter and consumes more power.

I could always upgrade the 570 in my machine to another nVidia card instead ;-) nVidia cards look expensive, but work so much better for my day to day OS! (Arch Linux)

I've got a 6850 in my 2.9GHz athlon 64 3700 system. (also using an NF4 ultra-d) I submitted scores to the valley and heaven threads in this section. (They were poor, but not too bad considering the settings) Not tried playing anything really modern on it though, last time i used it for gaming it had a 3870 in it playing assassins creed and fallout 3 which it did quite well albeit at 1280x1024.

I thought you already had a X1950XTX???

The box that needs upgrading has an X1950XTX. It's my OHs. It was a build of mine a few years ago. Fortunately she's not obsessed with having the latest and greatest like some of us haha :-) I could put the 570 from my desktop in that system and get myself a 670 or something.

That's my style of thinking.. if a little selfish! ;)
