The GPU in my boys rig is having problems so i was thinking of getting a new one on payday(friday).
in the new market what should i be looking at for 1080 @ a sustained 60fps(vsync).

his system as an i3 with 8gb of ram. the 280X he as now was more then upto the job so would think a gpu of the same is power would be ok for him. he will be wanting the new battlefront on relise so would like that to run smooth at 60fps without drops if can be done on an i3 cpu.

Budget would be £250 but dont want to by a card that will be wasted on 1080.
his mobo and psu would be ok for two cards if there is some low end card that are upto it when in cf/sli.

The 380 is a rebadged 285 if I'm not mistaken.
The 285 is slightly slower than the 280X

The 390 is an improved 290 that has a slightly higher clockspeed with reduced voltages. There aren't any reference 390 cards, so they'll all be nice and cool.

A 390 has a higher clock, faster memory speed and runs cooler so not a straight rebadge. Also performs a bit better than a 970 while the 290 was actually slower.

there was an r9 290/290x with 8gb of ram and it have higher clocks a little lower core volts. that is now an 390..

970/290x is your best bet. Both are great cards at 1080p. Bear in mind that Battlefront will have AMD Mantle built in so that 280X may be flying the flag for little bit longer than you think, if you have Battlefield 4 installed then try that with Mantle and monitor the FPS. That'll give you a rough idea of how well Battlefront will run on a 280X. Mantle should work wonders on that i3, Mantle is way more effective on lower-end CPUs.

280x as problem that mean it will need to be replaced and binned, i do agree with you about mantle the 280x when in my system would run BF4 on high preset with no problem and on the i3 system did a dam good job too.

i would upgrade the cpu but its a little monster i was supper surprised when i first used the i3 to how much it can do with HT, the Pentium is same cpu without HT and is worthless in gaming situation

No it's not, They made important improvements to the chip and there was no 8gb 290. There was an 8 gb 290x sure but it was a 290x with extra ram. The 390 has several improvements allowing for an extra 1ghz on the ram speed as well as improvements that allow it to clock higher and run cooler. Add to that the fact that they did not do the rubbish reference versions and you get a very good card that in my opinion is better thna a 970.
However, As mentioned if there is less cpu usage when using the 970 (I haven't looked it up myself so just going on what's being said) and it makes a noticeable difference then that will be the better option.

The 380 is a rebadged 285, Apparently a full Tonga chip (the 380 uses a cut down Tonga) is coming in a 380x soon. Maybe wait for that. I predict 290 beating performance there.

I loving father would plump up for triple 980ti
on an i3 that will break records

lol ;)

The R9 380X is rumoured to be released soon,so it might be worth seeing how it pans out first??

When you say soon is this a real soon(2015) or and AMD soon(2018)

TBF the 970 sould like a play but if the 380x will be here soon and fill the £100 price gap with 380-390 it may be worth looking at
do we have any idea what gpu will be used?
