New GPU needed, what's your take on this please?

Hey guys,

I currently have the AMD RX 5700 (non XT) and looking to upgrade, it's been a long while since I've looked at GPUs and TBH the market is a right mess!

So, I know I'm fairly limited in budget but I have seen this: Gigabyte AMD RX 7700XT - OCUK for £359.99 and a free game. (Online tests seem to put this at approx a 50% bump in performance over my 5700?)

Is this my best choice for this kind of budget? I did look at the 7800 XT but it appears there isn't a big difference in performance?

Any advice greatly received, thanks chaps

(edit: I have also considered the Intel Arc B580 but not sure its that much better performance wise and it may not play nicely with my older games?)

Rest of spec:

Intel 12700KF
32GB DDR5
Asus TUF 850W Gold PSU
1440p 180Hz monitor

Looks like a great choice, as the only similarly priced card is the 4060Ti but that only has 8GB or the 5060Ti for a little more money but a little more performance.

I'd agree that the 7800XT isn't worth it for the little extra performance it offers (as for £50 more there is a RX 9070 model available - although that starts you on the slippery slope of budget creep).

RX 9060XT is expected to be announced May 21st and will likely slot in somewhere around the 7700XT - 7800XT performance wise, but being a new product will likely be priced probably £450-£500

Arc B580 is definitely worse than a RX7700XT

This thread might also be of use if you haven't seen it before - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gpu-hierarchy.18951645/ where I've tried to marry up performance from a few different review sources to establish a comparison of how different cards stack up.

Thanks mate, appreciate the info.

So it looks like the 7700XT is my best option for now, given that the 7800XT is approx £100+ extra and then its silly money for anything else!

Do you think its worth picking up a used GPU (always a minefield) like a 6900XT or 6950XT?

Just had a quick look, that is a genuinely helpful list, its so easy to get lost in where all the GPUs sit especially when you are looking into so many options!

Personally at that price I wouldn't hang about - looks like a stock clearance price to make room for 9060XT / whatever other price adjustments AMD want to make.

I'd have no issue with something from the MM. I wouldn't personally look at a 69xx just because there were big improvements in Raytracing and other efficiencies with the 7xxx series, to the point that even a 7700XT isn't that far behind a 6900XT in certain games

e.g. 7700XT Raytracing benchmarks here:

Thanks again, you've been a great help

If you can get one at the temporary price AMD support on launch, the 9060 XT might be a better buy than the 7700 XT, since it'll have FSR4 (still not sure if the 7700 XT will). If you can't wait that long, the upgrade is decent.

Hi mate,

Any idea on when it's likely to be released and the approx cost?

Thanks for your reply :)

;) :D

I'm hoping the price will be lower than quoted on launch, but if it follows the 9070/9070 XT then it will immediately go up £50-£100+ once the supported base model cards are sold out.
