New GPU or wait? eternal question...

Do you guys think I would be stupid to buy a 4080 super now?
I know the 5000 series is probably launching in a few months, but in reality the chances of getting hold of a 5080 anywhere near launch are slim if last generations are to go by. took me 6 months to get a 3080 FE, and that was only because I dedicated myself to stock alerts etc, which I can't do easily now.
Gaming at 4k is ok on my card, but I need me some more frames. Just not sure if waiting would be the sensible option.

I love my 4080S, great card, very powerful. I game at 1440p no issues, it’s my cpu if anything holding my games back a bit.

My 9800x3d is coming today so that shouldn;t be an issue, it's my 3080 that will be holding me back if anything. I game at a mix of 1440 and 4k. I think I will go for it, I can always sell it if I did manage to get a 5080 I suppose.

Apparently Nvidia will showcasing the 5000 series at CES in January so maybe February at the earliest.

The 4080 super at £900 isn't to bad imo .

The crypto boom is over, so I don't think that'll be such a big deal this time, unless the cards are useful for AI in which case: good luck.

I think the 9000 versus 9800X3D situation has shown that reviews have a big impact on sales and so does how many are waiting for a decent upgrade.

There are a fair chunk of people on cards like: 3080/3090/6900 XT/6950 XT that would love a decent upgrade and don't consider the current cards worthwhile, so if nvidia pull a rabbit out of the hat and make the 5080 30-50+% faster than the 4080 at a not outrageous price, then demand will likely be high.

There is also a B grade for 800 quid. Obv a bit wary of B grade stuff, but if it's rubbish when it's delivered it could go straight back anyway. for that price (or even 900) it is seriously tempting.

GPU's ARE good for ai already though, that's the issue. 4080 super seems like a decent upgrade from the 3080 already at high resolution (I don't care about ray tracing,) and my worry is, that if the 5080 comes out and is a massive flop then there won't be many 4080 supers around to buy anyway at a "cheap" price like there are now. just like you can't find a single 4090 for MSRP.

Sure, but what I meant is that if it has decent vram and a nice performance uplift (we've seen with Zen 5, for example, that it was pretty focused on this kind of compute performance) then in that situation it'll be very hard to get. Nvidia are still going to reserve their best for AI though, whatever happens for gaming.

I would guess that the 4090 issue is both AI and limited supply for the higher end GPUs. If you have the money for the best, you're going to get the best, whereas if you don't the 4080 is rather pricey. The 4090 is also a decent chunk faster than any other card, which hasn't historically been the case. If the 4080 had decent sales potential I doubt nvidia would have undercut themselves by making the 4080 Super cheaper, for example.

true true. I do wonder if it's just a case of "I bought a new rig, and it's the last piece I need to upgrade" kind of thing going on in my head. never really felt the 3080 was slow at all.
Maybe I should do the smart thing and wait. Just have horrible memories of trying to get a 3080 for months on end, don't want to go through that again lol.

I'd have a good watch of this, if you haven't seen it. It goes through the pros/cons in detail and you get side-by-side comparison.

I'd be surprised if demand for the lower-tier cards was that high, isn't Blackwell the first GPU specifically designed with AI in mind? Not convinced that's going to make great gaming performance, but the top tier card will likely sell anyway.

Cheers dude. yeah I will skip this card for now. I think it would have been good for me a year ago, but just too close to the possible launch of the 5000 series. I think you're right about blackwell. Didn't really know much about it, but having a quick google now and it's quite interesting,

if you game at 4k then I would personally wait as you need every bit of GPU power you can get, a 5080 which should be ~40% faster than a 4080 baseline and possibly better raytracing. That is too much to miss out on just for waiting 3-4 months. Plus your gpu is not dire bad, you can make a lot of games work by adjusting settings.
