New GPU Power Connectors

Hi there,

Currently thinking of upgrading from an older 8600GTS to a GTX 260, but I'm lacking in power connectors. The GTX260 requires two 6-pin connectors, my PSU only supplies one at the moment. I've only got one 4-pin molex spare running from the PSU, would it be safe to assume I can split the one remaining 4-pin molex then use a 2x4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E connector to provide the second 6-pin?

The other alternative, if I shouldn't split the one remaining 4-pin molex is to remove another 4-pin from a DVD drive, and make the drive redundant to then convert with my currently free 4-pin to power the GPU.

Any suggestions? There should hopefully be included with the GPU a 2x4-pin molex to 6-pin adapter.

Currently 550W, stock from the Antec Sonata. Never had power issues with it, and even under full load currently I'm at around 300W.

Quick spec:

PSU - 550W.
CPU - Intel Core 2 E8400 @ 3Ghz
Mobo - Gigabyte EP35-DS3R
Mem - 3GB PC6400.
GPU - 8600GTS
Extra - 2 DVD drives, 2 SATA HDDs., a couple of extra PCI cards.

The graphics card will come with the adaptors so don't worry.

I'm currently in the same situation as you, although I use the DVD RW molex and a spare molex in a fancy chain to power the GFX :D - you could just disconnect the DVD drive if you wanna feel secure.

Who uses 2 DVD drives anyways :p

For the a 2x4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E connector use 2 molex direct from your PSU (this will provide a max of 75w).

You can use a molex spliter on another molex to power 2 optical/Hard drives, as these don't use much power(under 30w). No need for a redundant dvd drive.

Ah, hadn't thought of running it that way round. Thanks very much.
