New GPU to hot

Hi all,

I have just purchased a new GPU- Nvidia GeGorce 9800GT the problem I have now is that the GPU after approximately 1h 30mins of game play the core was at a temperature of 82c and then now it is at 53c and it has only been on for half an hour and I have left the computer sitting idle for the entire time.

I am presuming I need a new fan to get rid of air quicker. Does anybody know which fan would be suitable for my computer? It is a Dell Dimension 9200 with factory fit fans.

Thanks

sounds like you are trapping hot air in the case. a new cooler wouldn't help.

you need either more powerful fans or just more fans pulling air in and spitting it out.

what sort of cooler is on the card? does it push air out the case or just circulate it?

just for comparison my 9600gt is idling at 53C now.

Yes Graphics cards get this hot I had an 8800GT, that was a hot card 85c at times. I imagine the 9 series aren't much better. A GTX295 will hit 90 and HD4870 a little over for comparison.

Thanks iBSOD for the recommendation.

Hi f12f12, I have attached a picture so you can see were the air goes in my computer. The card as a factory fit cooler. I am unsure but I think some air is going out but some many just circulate.

Hi ColonelCage, thanks for the info

Hi Orcvader, I have the factory fit case for the Dell Dimension 9200.

*** PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PSU IS VENTING AIR OUT OF THE CASE AND NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND AS SUGGESTED IN THE DIAGRAM***

also Orvader I have only heard the GPU fan once and that was yesterday. I stopped plyaing a game and the temperature was 80-84c

key for picture:
1. PSU has a fan
2. CPU has a fan
3. Fan on its own
4. GPU has its own fan

BTX! Avert your eyes.

You may find the power supply at the top right actually vents the hot air out, it's rather strange for a PSU to vent into a case, even for a BTX Dell case.

Is there a fan slot above the graphics card? Or is it just a grille? If there isn't then no wonder you have issues, especially if your PSU is pulling air into the case as well.

Hi Tealc,

Yes you are correct the PSU is venting hot air out and not the other way round as stated in my diagram. It is just a grille so that the hot air from the CPU can vent hot air out I presume. Could a fan be fitted to the grille to help pull air out?

i used to have a dell dimension and your airflow arrows are wrong, the cpu cooler vents out the front of the case.

the dell dimension has no intake fans only 2 exhausts, cpu the fan at the front and the psu. it is designed to pull in air from the grill above where your graphics card is.

Hi Chipps 101,

From what I can tell, my diagram arrows are correct apart from the PSU arrows being incorrect as I posted early in this thread.

thanks

someone has reversed your cpu fan then i think, in which case it is dumping hot air onto your gfx card instead of venting it out the front.

Whether or not you can fit a fan to the grille depends on how much space is available. If you could mount a 120mm fan on there somewhere that'd be great. You could use strong double sided foam tape, silicone sealant or something. If a 120mm won't fit then maybe an 92mm or 80mm but of course they'll be noisier.

You could even mount outside the case if there's no room inside.

Remember though that grilles are restrictive and if they are of the small holed variety then your fan will have to work hard for little gain.

Hi chipps 101,

Nobody has touched the CPU fan since it was out of the box. Is this a Dell factory error? and what would be the best course of action now?

Thanks Tealc for the information.

the btx dell dimensions i have seen and the one i had have all vented the air out the front of the case from the cpu cooler, thats why it is at the front of the case instead of the back like a normal motherboard where the cpu cooler vents the air straight to the rear exhuast fan.

you could try turning the fan around so it does this and i think it will help with the airflow as it will be drawing air from the vent above your gfx card.
