Hi all I have been out of the picture in the GPU department and would like some advice please.

I want to get a new GPU I will mainly use it for ARMA2 etc so games realy but mainly ARMA2 and OA.

My rig at the moment is

Win XP 32bit
Intel Core2 Quad Q6700 std clocks
8800GT
Corsair TX650 PSU
4GB ram

My native res is 1680x1050

Say I have a budget of about £120ish.

It must have 1gb of ram I and if any one is running a certain card in ARMA2 and they would like to recommend it that would be great.

I was looking at the ATI 4870 its cheap and I have heard good things about it.

Thanks all

Hi there yeah sorry forgot to say DX11 I couldn't care less about tbh.

edit

As a guess how much faster would you lot say a 4890 is compared to a 8800gt

Stretch a little bit more cash, get a CPU cooler and overclock you processor! You will get a large performance bump, on top of the new graphics card

Hi there I may in the future and I dont need to upgrade me CPU cooler ;) I haves a Titan fenrir :)

So your probably asking well why have you not all ready well I will tell you

When you come from an ABIT NF7-S 2.0 with a AMD mobile chip at 2.2ghx and an old 9800pro AGP.

Me Q6700 was just to fast for me :P in comparison hahaha.

Edit

But yes you are correct its criminal not to OC the Q6700 and its from OCUK so I am sure at the time they was offering the best ones to OC :)

Yeh the 4870x2 is a great card. The things you need to consider though are the heat output, power consumption and look at how old the card is before buying. I've seen a few more rmas for this card recently so try and get one not too old, preferably not previously oc'd and some remaining warranty would be nice :) if not the 4890 is a good choice, brand new with warranty.

I can't speak for nvidias last series of cards for a comparison myself, but anandtech's new bench tool will help you a lot if you want an answer on that.

Hi there I will be honest having no warranty worries me so I think the 4870x2 is out really.

I have looked at more tests on the 4890 and its hitting some bloody good speeds according to the site it eats even the 5770 :).

I may get the 4890 ooohhhhhh I want to know how it handles ARMA2 and OA as thats the game I am purchasing it for really.

Good choice on the 4890 there, they are cracking cards (basically a 4870 with higher clocks and fixed several issues).

You should be warned though, you won't see any great performance increases in these two games. Arma 2 is more CPU dependant than 95% of the games out there. You must overclock the CPU or you get killed with a crit for over 9000.

Yeah I do intend to I will run it at clock speed at first though and if I am happy then I will leave it at clock speeds if not I will then OC the CPU and see what I get.

Ok just a case of pushing that pay now button ;)

I would be interested to see what sort of o/C you can get on that Q6700, I have mine at 3.2ghz but any higher then that it becomes unstable because the northbridge get to hot. I'm running on a Foxconn X48 Blackopps, the NB 'heatsink' is actaully a hybrid waterblock come heatsink I should have fitted then little 50mm fan as it might have improved things but I'm happy.

Hi all ok well when I get to that stage I will report back on my findings if I OC me CPU.

Just for the record though my MB is Asus striker extreme.

EDIT

OK well I have done it I have purchased the 4890 1gb :) thanks for the info should be here Tuesday.
