Hi all.

I am looking for a little advice for a new GPU.

I have just upgraded CPU to 5800x3d and increased ram to 32gb. I have only got a 1440p monitor with 165 refresh rate.
So far I have been looking at the 7900xtx and 4080 but are these overkill if i am not running 4k?

Open to suggestions on GPU's not listed but want something that will last. Leaning towards 4080 as cooler and uses less power.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

If you aren't looking to replace your monitor before your next GPU upgrade, RTX4070ti is the best option in my opinion.

Depends entirely on your expectations really, if you want to play maxed out in the latest games, then no, absolutely not, but if you're happy with 1440p/60, dropping the settings down or only play older games, then yes.

I want maxed out :). Should last a bit then as well.

Wanting to play hogwarts legacy. Atm. Cod as well Forspoken I’m giving a bit of time to also.

7900 XTX is somewhat of a beast in Cod. I was in your position and decided to go for the AMD,ray tracing etc doesn’t really bother me. But if that’s important to you then the 4080 is probably the way to go.

I have a 4090 running at 3440 X 1440 and I’m maxing out my monitors refresh rate at 175hz on most games so it’s not a waste.

I would go with the 4070ti , mainly because of the better power performance,

I would NOT go for the rx6800 XT because of the transient power spike issues. Same for avoiding the RTX 3080.

Is 4080 a lot better? I see the 7900xtx has a lot more vram. The 6800 looks nice but I want a bit of overkill I think lol
If you are on Freesync and not worried about ray tracing, XTX is fine. the 16GB 4080 at around the same price would be my pick though

Compared to the 6800? Yes. It is. £400-£500+ better? I think you'd need to choose that for yourself. Have a watch of videos like these (keep in mind the settings, resolution and CPU used), it might help to clarify it for you, if you'll be satisfied with the 6800 XT (or not).

I think the 6800XT would be ideal for your CPU/resolution. Better 'VFM', too, in these crazy GPU times.
This 100%

£600

or a 4070ti if you really want all the RT and Nvidia stuff.. £800 and the one I would get currently :-

My money would be on the 6800XT not the 4070ti out of the two with your setup.

That's interesting, I have a 34" 3440 X 1440 with a 160hz refresh running a 3090 and did not think I would get any benefit from a 4080 or 4090 unless I was running a 4k monitor
