Afternoon,

I'm in the market to look for a new GPU but I'm not really too sure what to look for now as I haven't bought one in a good few years.

I'm currently rocking an Nvidia GTX 295 which is starting to show its age and struggling with games.

My current problem is that I'm only running an XFX 650W PSU which seems to be insufficient for the GPUs now, but buying a new PSU would set me back in budget.

I've tried scouting for a second hand GTX 680/780 but they're practically the same price as a new card.

Budget without PSU is around £250 give or take.

for that budget, GTX 970 is the best

Read that this might be fixed by a future driver by loading specific stuff into the slow 500 mb area leaving the fast memory for the stuff that really needs it. How true or effective it will prove to is anyone's guess.

Whilst i havent owned any recent AMD cards myself, ive read/heard good things about sapphire as a brand. Hopefully some of the AMD owners on here will be able to give you a bit more info.:)

There is a Tri-X 8GB due soon I believe.

How much of an issue is the DX 11.2 vs 12 on the AMD cards vs the 970/980? Will the 290X etc. support DX12 when it's released? DX12 is unproven yet of course, but it does look like it could potentially bring a lot to the table.

Not sure why a lot of people keep saying or assuming why 290/x cards wont support DX12? Even microsoft said DX12 would be supported by these cards. GCN cards would support DX12 from what they said! However its not FULLY supported as in every feature of DX12 which nVidia claims thier 900 series cards do! Fully supports DX12

Yes, actually I didn't think there would be zero support for the AMD cards, I should have clarified that. More concerned about how 'not fully' it will be supported, and if the 970/980 would have a BIG and noticeable advantage there.

I actually upgraded from the same card to a R9 290 and it was a massive leap in performance. I kept the same PSU but it's a 1000 W Cooler Master (if I remember correctly).

Giving the stonking deals atm though I'd say go for a 290X.
