New GPU

Like for like, how do the 290X (4GB or 8GB) stack up against the 970/980? I never recall reviews recommending them once the 970/980 cards were released, yet people seem to be moving that way now, which I don't understand? I am concerned jumping to AMD is a knee jerk reaction that I might regret.

I would get a Vaper-X or Tri-X, i have both and have not had any problems but they are long cards so your case needs to be ok with the size:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-04-40G) £239.99
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-00-40G) £229.99
Total : £479.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I had a look at both of those cards and was very interested in the Vapor-X card. Might buy that one if I can't find anything else.

There is a Tri-X 8GB due soon I believe.

How much of an issue is the DX 11.2 vs 12 on the AMD cards vs the 970/980? Will the 290X etc. support DX12 when it's released? DX12 is unproven yet of course, but it does look like it could potentially bring a lot to the table.

Hmm, what price range are we looking at for an 8GB version though?

I actually upgraded from the same card to a R9 290 and it was a massive leap in performance. I kept the same PSU but it's a 1000 W Cooler Master (if I remember correctly).

Giving the stonking deals atm though I'd say go for a 290X.

This makes me want to buy one right now haha

Edit: Looks like I'm going to have to purchase a new PSU, mine only has two 8-pins and one is in use for the mobo.
