Good morning everyone.First post so maybe some errors.I have an msi x99s xpower mb.I purchased a gigabyte gtx 980 g1 gaming graphics card on monday from overclockers. However the card will not fit into 1st pci slot because the backplate fouls on the bottom ram slot mountings.I am getting a refund however, as all 970/980 cards have a backplate does anyone know of one that will fit.I do not want an msi one even though it has no plate.Bit long winded but thanks in advance.

Good replies but i have already set up for an rma.I have tried the card in pci 2/3/4 and it is ok but in 2/3 covers sata connectors.I new the card was long, but was no probs in a corsair 750d.For purely visual appearance and convenience i would want to use slot 1.Kinda anal i know but at the price it is annoying.Chronic design by MSI,probably knowing everyone will have to finish up getting one of their cards.

I have had a look at various cards and it appears anything with a backplate will require dropping to slot 2.Very interested in the MSI 290x lightning on pre order or the oc version.yes it has a backplate but a whacking saving of £180 over the gtx 980.Will these cards be OK with windows 10 and direct X 12.

Any of the cards will be fine on Win10 and DX12, but getting a refund just because you didn't check the dimensions of the card before buying is.. mmm..

Personally I'd be more bothered about what it can produce onscreen rather than what position the card is in on your mobo but that's maybe just me.

Cheers for reply. The gigabyte card backplate fouled on bottom memory slot housing. The dimensions of the card were immaterial. When I phoned in and explained an RMA no was emailed to me before I had finished phone call. The back plates require a small recess to clear ram slots.

But the dimensions include the backplate, that g1 980 is longer than a reference design 268.6 vs 312mm for the g1, you could have checked to see overhang, even though it really doesn't make a difference.. if the card fits in any applicable slot you're only trading off some possible aesthetics

The length of the card has nothing to do with fouling ram slot.It is the depth of the backplate in relation to the pci connector. In other words the ram slots are too close to the first PCI slot.If slot 1 is unuseably, then so is sli down the pan.
