Okay... so my budget is £180. I've decided to replace my nVidia GeForce 8500GT graphics card and buy nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 512mb (many people told me GTX isn't worth the money and GTS is almost the same performance so I'm happy). I have found this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-003-PN&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927
My first question is: Is it a good graphics card and is it worth buying? Is "overclockers.co.uk" a good website? Anyone got any experience of buying here?

Now the other thing... I've checked my Power Supply. Opened case and on the Power Supplier the label said "Max Output Power 300W". So it is 300w. Will that graphics card that I've found work on this Power Supply? Or do I need more? How much more and where could I buy quite cheap Power Supplier so I am ok with my budget? I don't know much about these 12v etc, etc. So please some guide of buying and replacing would be nice.

Thank you very much for all your replies. Highly appreciated.

who told you the GTX isn't worth the money? it is if you are playing at a high res, as the memory bandwith will do good at higher resolutions, but if you want to play at 1680x1050, then the GTS ought to be ok.

what is your resolution and what is the budget.

ok, as for your power supply, forget it... simply do not put any new card into that PSU... What you need to look at is the amount of amps that are provided on each 12V rail - this is where power for the CPU and the graphics card comes from. On my 8800GT, i need to have 26 amps on the 12 volt rail in order to power the card, but my PSU supplies 38A on 2 rails, so it's more than enough. the 8800GTS 512 probably wants around the same amount of power, and your PSU i doubt will supply it... Go for a Corsair PSU... or Enermax... Or PC Power & Cooling

welcome to the forums, by the way :D

Thanks for the welcome :)

I have a HP w1907v 19" monitor. The resolution I usually play at is 1440x900. My budget is £210 but £30 is going for Age of Conan preorder so that leaves me with £180 budget to spend on new graphics card and PSU. Any suggestions for PSU in maximum price £45 - £50? Thanks in advance :)

As your resolution is not too high , the GTS would probably be overkill and this would serve you well

www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-PN&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

This leaves you with approx £70 for a psu and this is within your price spec.

If you want to stick to your chosen Gpu then choice is limited to

or if you stretch a bit

Personally would go for better PSU which you can re-use. I have mentioned Corsair as a lot swear by 'em - I use a Coolermaster M series and would happily recomend.

lmao well that's kinda what i was getting at Big.Wayne but you got there b4 me lol

Ive bought all my pc parts from overclockers and they always get it spot on, and very fast deliveries, when i orderd the parts for ma new pc they all arrived 2 days after ordering on my birthday:)

best service ive seen.

and yes the 8800GTS 512 is a good choice i think.

i actualy agree with what Big.Wayne spec'd you, but the 450w or 520w psu as others have said

Hmmm... Okay let's try this again. This is my PC specs at the moment:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
3GB (3072MB) RAM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
nVidia GeForce 8500GT
Monitor - HP w1907v 19"
Resolutions that I usually play at is 1440x900

What would be the best? I can spend £180 on a new graphics card and a PSU (300w wouldn't handle the new graphics card I think). What would be the best for me?

Option 1 = nVidia GeForce 8800GTS 512mb (G92 new version) for about £140 + 400w - 500w PSU for about £40 - £45.

Option 2 = nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512mb for about £110 + better PSU 600w or more for about £70.

I was really happy about 8800GTS 512mb but since the PSU is so much of a problem and it is gonna last quite long, then, I am a bit confused. Is 8800GTS 512mb (G92) much better than 8800GT 512mb or just a slight difference? Especially on my resolutions...

Thanks for all the answers. Really appreciated.

Option #1 (already posted above)

This is a great deal for you right now, that PSU is normally about £76.00 and OcUK are selling it for £20 less this week only, bargain! It may be more powerful than you require today but the extra could come in handy in the future should u need it.

Option #2

This is what I would have normally suggested to you but as the Corsair TX650W is on discount atm you would have to be bonkers not to pay the extra.

Option #3

This is a nice option should you require a modular PSU, I like the HX series very much but from what I am reading the new Corded Corsairs are actually better PSUs (slightly more efficient!).

Personally would go for Option 2 with Corsair PSU (might not be modular but a fair bit more power which although not needed today may well be of use tommorrow)

P.S. When I bought my Coolermaster M700 it was a bit cheaper than the Corsair recomended to you - at the price it's a steal

So you recommend Corsair over Coolermaster? Many people told me that Coolermaster is the best out there... I'm confused now...

Enermax, Seasonic & PC Power & Cooling are the best out there.

Corsair has the best price to performance ratio.

Coolermaster PSU's are good, but they're no better or worse then Hiper's, Gigabytes, Antec's, Akasas, etc.

So what would be better 8800GTS and a bit weaker PSU or 8800GT and better PSU?

The latter would be my choice.

On reviews I've read and statements made in threads the Corsairs have the best power/performance. Lots of owners are very happy.

When I bought my psu I wanted modular and quiet. The Corsairs I felt were overpriced and the coolermaster ticked all the boxes AND was very efficient (not the best but up there) so I bought one. I have no regrets in my purchase.

But if I were buying today I would be sorerly tempted by the Corsair on offer here - I know it's not modular but when you're getting that power at that price......

Although it would be tempting to buy the more powerful gpu;at the resolution you game at you will not see any real benefit over the cheaper gt model. - and both will be outdated in a year(or less).:(

A quality Psu could last you for a few years ( the Corsair has I believe a 5 yr warranty - do check to be sure) powerring not only this but the next system etc :D

There are a few threads on here about ,mainly cheap but a few not so cheap , Psu's going 'pop' and taking various , expensive , bits with 'em . Best to buy the best you can.
