new graphics card - black screen :(

So I bought a new graphics card.. a GTX 460 and it came this morning. I plugged it in and used one pci-e connector from my corsair 430W builder series PSU and used a molex to pci-e connector for the other slot onto the graphics card. I turned it on and I hear a very quiet beeping noise - usually when I've had bad ram before it's very loud but this one is very quiet. It also stops after around 15 seconds. There is no display on screen, just black. The keyboard flashes, the cards fan is spinning, the cpu fan is spinning just no display. I'm using a dvi-vga converter in order to connect it. I have tried this converter on my old graphics card and it works fine. I don't have a dvi screen to try the card on, nor another computer. I plugged in my old card (GT520) and that boots up as normal using the converter, and using just vga (and hdmi). I'm not sure what to do, is the card faulty?

Hi there,

The beeping could be the card beeping as its not getting enough power.

Id try reseating the card, then try another pair of molexes with your molex to pci-e adaptor

Other things to try, have you tried both DVI or the HDMI ports on the card? Also if you have a second pci-e x16 slot it may be worth trying it in there :)

the molexes do seem to be of cheap quality - but I bought them from here so I figured they would be ok. I've reset the card many times, and only have one pci-e x16 slot. Also, I have no DVI screen, however I do have a hdmi one but it wont fit into the graphics card, I think it's mini-hdmi. I'll try again now.

Would updating my bios do anything?

ok I think you're onto something

I just tried it again, this is what happened:

I plugged in the graphics card and the pci-e connector from the PSU and connected the 4pin-molex to pci-econverter to the psu. Then i tried to turn it on and all the fans came on for a second and it wouldn't even turn on (anything). I then removed the molex converter, however keeping the pci-e fromt he psu plugged in and everything turned on and I got a graphics card beep. I'm assuming it's the converter?

now I have got a new converter and it powers up (still no display but all the fans turn on) now it is playing a continuous one long beep just BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP - pause - BEEEEEEEEEEEEP - pause and so on :|

Did you disconnect the power out of the power supply each time you swapped out the graphics card?

Sounds like it's the motherboard causing the issue to me

yes I did

I reset the CMOS and now no more beeps - the old graphics card works and im back to step 1 where there is no display. I don't hear the usual POST beep either - just a black screen but fans all running.

try clearing the CMOS by removing the battery and then putting your new card in, but leave the battery out for 30 minutes instead or maybe a little longer.
