Hi all,
Im new to the boards and have never really been any good at choosing a graphics card. I find i get confused very easily as there are always far too many models to choose from.

I have a need for an AGP graphics card and willing spend decent money on a good one. (I know AGP is old, and i should buy a new mainboard)

I was thinking of http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-106-XF

I have http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1881 that as a main board teamed with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 512kb.
I have 2GB Kingston RAM, with 2 (i think Barracuda) drives working striped.

My need for a new graphics card is that I play WoW and several other failry resource intensive games which my current system doesnt perform to well with. If anyone wants to find a mainboard which will fit my processor and a decent PCI-E graphics card to boot that would be great. Otherwise comments on the above graphics card and/or suggestions about any others would be great.

Try and find an ATI X1950 2nd hand, I don't think it's worth buying a brand new one for AGP anymore, especially if there's any hint of having to upgrade in less than a year.

Hi and welcome,

In your position I'd sell on my mobo,cpu + ram you'd possibly get as much as £90 ( £15 cpu - £45 ram - £30 mobo )

the card you quoted comes to a shocking Total : £185.64 incl vat and del

add that to the £90 gives you £275

buy the following items

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-101-GI&tool=3

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-171-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL

This leaves enough left over for this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-081-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=416

giving a total spend of £276.02 incl vat and del

so for the price you were going to pay for a new graphics card you have an entirely new system ( bar hdd's etc ) which will knock the trousers off your current one. you don't mention which gpu you are running now but if its X800 / 6800 and you sold that for £30 incl del you have covered your costs and gained a huge amount of performance.

I think my grpahics card is something like a PNY geforce 6600 (non GT version) 256MB ram.

I always thought AMD was better for gaming than Intel? I dont tend to keep completely up to date with the latest technologies though.

Thank you for your contructive reply. I think I will do that and I have a spare HDD at home so may make a whole system up and sell it all together.

Cheers :)

the 6600 could fetch as much as £35-35 at auction, in local papers or to friends or family it could be worth selling as a system. I'd avise splitting it up and selling at auction
