Hi Guys,

So after a stint abroad and my desktop being in storage i have come home to a dead graphics card!

This was my gaming PC years ago, now its my daily. I want to replace the graphics card so that 1) I am not stuck at 1920x1080 on my 4k screen and 2) to play some older games.

Looking to go chaep as chips as I have trwins on the way and will ahve little time to game tbh....

Specs of the PC are as follows:

Intel core i5-3570k (3.40GHz)
8GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance
Asus P8Z77-v LX
EVGA 700BR PSU

Thanks in advance from a soon to be dad approaching his mid life crisis!

4k and cheap don't go together
what games are you wanting to play
what gpu did you have before
what is your budget
that pc is old, be prepared for answers you don't want

First off Congratulations!!

Maybe just look at some older stuff second hand like Nvidia 1080 if you need it cheap, may have a bottleneck somewhere though! I'm sure others will be along shortly to assist and give you some other options

To be clear i DO NOT expect to be gaming at 4k! Just to be able to view a website without my eyes screaming at the zoom level!!

I honestly cannot remember maybe a GTX 980? Binned it!

Games just old BF3, MOH of the same generation, AOE...

Happy to look used or new maybe £200....

Lets be honest all i am trying to avoid is buying anything thats pointless powerful for this setup!

Used options gtx970, 980,1080 series probably

Buying new roughly £200--230 would get you
An intel arc b580
Would probably go for the new option personally
Reasonably cheap and you get a warranty

You are very much mistaken - it all depends upon the games you want to play and the video quality you expect. A B580 or RX 9060 XT should be perfectly capable of 4k 60 fps in older games at medium or low settings. My B580 benches at just under 60 fps in Horizon Zero Dawn at medium settings, for instance. And that's without any upscaling.

I would, however, upgrade to 16 GB RAM.

If OP plans to keep their current system, I wouldn't recommend it, due to the lack of rebar and old PCIE gen.
Yeah that's a good point
Though don't know how much it would suffer
Because of those

Trying not to say you need a whole new build
To them Is difficult
Perhaps used gpu is the better choice
Though no warranty then

It is not good, even watching the video gives me a headache.

Since OP can't remember what they had, that makes it harder to recommend anything :o

Might be better off getting a used bundle with a 12100F/12400F or 5600, but obviously that is added cost.

Thanks for all the replies, I did find a picture from a while ago, it was an Asus GTX980.

Appreciate the RAM recommendation, I think that weould be wise. Already have a SSD and the system is plenty quick for day to day bits (Chrome eating through it haha!)

I would be happy to go used or new, but would prefere new for piece of mind, although at this stage anything could fail due to age.

I see the B580 is a no in m ost opinions so what would be the best bang for buck new within my range?

You're probably better off going second hand.

Something along the lines of an AMD RX580 or Nvidia 970/980 should be doable for around £40-60. You could probably even get a AM4 or equivalent Intel bundle for under £150 too. This is assuming your PSU is up for the task, but if it was running an 980 it should be fine for the cards I've mentioned.

There is a high street UK shop that sells games/dvd's second hand that will also sell hardware and offers (I believe) a two year warranty, could be worth a look.

Thanks i shall look further :)

Ryzen 3600 - £40-50
16gb of DDR4 - £10-20
Nvidia 980 - £48

Something like this:
My basket at OcUK:

Total: £77.45 (includes delivery: £3.99)

OCUK take offers on B-Grade items too, if you check this thread:

You can get some parts cheaper on Chinese market websites which are technically new, but you're generally not covered by warranty if something goes wrong.

Regardless, you could equally just drop the 980 into your existing rig if you're happy with the performance it offers for older games.

You weren't happy with the performance of the 980 at 4K, right?

In an ideal world, I'd get something like this (12400F is only a bit more and worth it)

(cooler included in CPU box):

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £516.96 (includes delivery: £7.99)

I'm surprised how much DDR4 has gone up, yikes.

If taking TPU's (GPU database) numbers, we have (from a GTX 980): a 4060 or Arc B580 as roughly twice as fast:

RTX 2060: +50%
RX 6600: +65%
RTX 3060 12GB: +72%
RTX 4060: +101%
Arc B580: +107%
RX 9060 XT 16GB: +163%

If you wanted to mainly play older games, I'm not sure which upscaling technology would be best, but they all work better at 4K than say, 1080p.

I'm using a RTX 3050 on a 4 gen Haswell sytem - i7 4790K and H81 Motherboard.

Runs very smooth.
