I currently have Asus GeForce GTX 260 TOP 896MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card and looking for a new card for Battlefield 3. I was thinking of the following:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6950 FLEX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

the rest of my system is:

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 4.00GHz
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 Motherboard /
Corsair 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz DDR3 Bundle

Will this be enough to hopefully play the game smooth enough?

That would be enough, maybe pick up the same card again and crossfire ? that would most definatly bring out the best in bf3 without a huge amount of money! but really id wait and play bf3 first then decide.

Even playing BF Bad Company 2 i can't play it on max settings. So I def need a new card and BF3 is the perfect excuse.

I doubt it.

The beta is out on the 27th so wait for the benchmarks or better still if possible play it on your computer before buying a GPU.

even in the beta, they wont allow people to run maxed out :) they will keep a few features back. im sure they did that with bc2 in the beta.

I can't find the exact screenshot but someone tweeted a dice representative asking "Can I run it on ultra with one GTX580 or will I need two?" and they replied with just "Two."

Google it, i'm sure you'll be able to find the screenshot somewhere.

hoping my 4890 will cut it for a bit as skint. Not arsed about max settings

I guess we will all find out soon :)

well according to DICE you will need 2 x GTX 580's to play it at maximum

This is actually an ambiguous statement from Dice. There is no mention of:

1) Resolution (768, 720p, 1050p, 1080p, 1600p ?)
2) FPS number (i.e 30+, 45, 60, 100FPS, ?)
3) What settings (AA x4, x16, ?)

other than to say 'Ultra settings'

The recommended settings are High settings and you only need a single 6950 or 560 for it.

The ultra setting is the next level and suddenly you require 580 sli

Tbh if someone said ultra to me, that means they where probably running full AA on 3 1600p monitors in 3d. Then yes, 580gtx SLI is needed or better.

True

In this forum, I have never seen anyone recommend 580 sli for 1920 x 1080p res. It has only been recommended for the settings which you described:)

One 580 is an overkill for 1080p, let alone 2 x 580

Taken from System Requirements Lab

BF 3:

Video Card:

Minimum: (AMD): DirectX 10.1 compatible with 512 MB RAM (ATI Radeon 3000, 4000, 5000 or 6000 series, with ATI Radeon HD 3870 or higher performance)(NVIDIA): DirectX 10.0 compatible with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce 8, 9, 200, 300, 400 or 500 series, with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT or higher performance)

Recommended: DirectX 11 compatible with 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or ATI Radeon HD 6950)

Again, above specs are for the beta. We all just need to wait and see. I am sure the 6950 will be fine. But hell if not, when BF3 comes out you can order a card and get a new one the next day.

Well, one would think "ULTRA" settings includes higher resolutions like 1920x1080 and above?. Also, there is no mention from EA/DICE if this is for single player campaign or the multiplayer component?. Although if i'm honest there would be no need for ultra graphics in mp for me, only the sp campaign i would even bother with ultra settings, i don't care how ultra graphically good my enemy dies in mp :D.
