New graphics card noise issues

Hi all,

I just built a new PC and despite that case being much bigger than i thought (600t.. its ridiculously big?!) everything is up and running fine.

The issue is whenever I game my graphics card (MSI 7950 twin frozr III) ramps up almost immediately into a very annoying whine sound. This only seems to happen when the fans around 55+% but it's really distracting. The thing that seems strange is I checked using various temperature monitering tools and it doesn't even get that hot (around 55-59 c at most when playing witcher 2.. pretty much the most demanding game I've got) and as soon as I alt tab - the fans drop to silent straight away.

Is this normal? If so, what are my options? The air from my computer isn't hot and it seems quite well cooled so far and I haven't OC'd anything yet. It's really distracting and bumming me out honestly!

Sounds like it could be coil whine.

Oh and, I consider the corsair 600t to be a fairly "normal" size, but then my prior case was a Cosmos S and currently a Cosmos II (and you can get bigger still o.o).

Just downloaded the MSI program and set the fan curve but it seems to completely ignore my manual settings and ramps up straight away?

Mine do that too but only installed them last night and benched em. Will play with custom fan profiles this evening. Default is way too lax initially then is too aggressive holding the card at 60c. I am used to seeing temps in the 80s to keep things quiet.

Hey, see my ocuk post below. Have you guys got the new boost edition? Seems MSI have issues with either fan speeds or temp sensors with a certain batch.

I DSR'd my card for this same issue as i was within 7 days. I think MSI are happy to fix them if you are out of DSR though. I DSR'd at their suggestion and they even offered to RMA it directly themselves if my retailer was not helpful, so MSI are being very helpful.

Don't mean to scaremonger, but this is the exact issue I had. Fans just ignore whatever you set them to in CCC or AB and seem to spin way faster than needed making the card very loud. Shame as the rest of the build quality was brilliant and my MSI card clocked really well (1150) with good temps (58c). Still really temped to order another MSI boost edition and try my luck, but my head is saying go for the gigabyte one now? I really liked the MSI card though.

See links to MSI forums below, there are other posts there too, with this fan problem, also it is not just 7950 or AMD specific it seems.

Right that's good to hear - I will send it back because I'm just not happy with the noise, everything else is very quiet.

How do I go about doing this under DSR? Never have before, but it arrived Wednesday.\

DSR is usually straight forward. You must do it with 7 days following delivery, after then the company do not have to accept a return unless there is a fault (which you have anyway). Obviously only relates to phone/online orders.

Most companies will have some kind of web form you fill out to request it, then you wait for them to give you an RMA number to write on the parcel you send back. Most companies will send you comprehensive instructions.

Most companies will not accept a return unless they authorise it and issue an RMA number. They cannot refuse DSR if you meet the criteria, but it can get a little messy if they are difficult.

Also keep in mind for DSR it has to be in as good condition as sent to you, including all packaging and free software etc... Otherwise they can claim damages/loss from you. Pack it properly for postage.

However DSR is your right and cannot be refused initially and they have 30 days to refund you once you inform them you are DSR'ing. There are loads of points and details to go into, but if you are within 7 days there are not normally any issues unless there is damage so I won't go into it all.

Don't be put off by this, pretty much all go through without an issue. Just get in touch with your retailer.

Got it :) I sent a webnote, and ordered a gigabyte 7950 to be delivered for monday! Let's hope this one actually lets me play games and hear the sound at the same time.

They are great for benching at 100% fan speed :D

My 3 I got yesterday do max CCC settings (1200/1575) with 100% fan speed ... I got them to be watercooled but they are broke and selling them later will be a pain so mine are going back (all 3 are the same - even at stock settings!), There must be a load of folk who are putting up with this and not knowing any different!

What is wrong with this image?

That AB screen shot is the same as my card's behaviour. Tachometer set at 46-48%, fans doing whatever the hell they feel like!

Just thought I'd add - my Windforce turned up today and its night and day - can't hear it even when playing the witcher 2 with all the settings (cept ubersampling!) on max.
