New graphics card: problems with strange screen tearing

Hey ^^

i have recently purchased pretty much a brand new pc ( motherboard , ram , gpu , cpu ) and while im really happy with everything , i seem to have some sort of issues with strange screen tearing ( i say strange , because they r much more like black solid horizontal lines instead of wavy screen tearing lines) . Both in games and on the desktop ( although only noticable sometimes on the desktop).

As i said these lines are solid lines, dark lines, however ( and im trying to explain this as best as i can) they do not actually overwrite the actual graphics... they are more like in the background , behind the actual game graphics ( they r not opaque , they r quite seethrough) . So i see the full screen , and all the details , but then i also get these weird darkish lines behind the detail. There is also some flickering going on and they do seem to be srolling downwards.

I have tried the usual fixes such as enabling v sync, forcing vsync in the nivida control panel, forcing triple buffering on in the nvidia control panel etc...

i did notice some differences in frequencies and placements of the lines when i was fiddling around with anti aliasing and ssao etc... but i couldnt actually get rid of them, and since i know nothing about this i didnt really know what i was doing .
One other thing that is very strange is that if i try to take screen shots of these lines, they do NOT appear on the actual screenshots. So its like my head is going mental :p

Just incase u need all my stats:

Samsung syncmaster 206bw ( around 5 years old) screen res: 1680 x 1050
Nvidia gtx 560 ti (twin frozr)
Asrock z68 extreme 3 gen 3 motherboard
intel sandy bridge i5 2500k 3.3ghz
8GB g-skill rip jaws ram
powersupply : OCZ stealthxstream 2 500W

Thats all i can think of right now. Any help on this would be much appreciated , i have no idea what it could be , wheter its software or hardware related ( maybe my monitor ? or worse my gpu? ) and my knowledge on these kind of things is to say the least noobish!!

P.s i have this problem in all the games im currently playing from battlefield 3 to deus ex to league of legends.

thx in advance guys

Hi, Right I am just going to reel off a few things here:

It won't be a vsync issue if they are appearing on your desktop as well.
How big is your powersupply (in terms of wattage and amperage etc)?
If you have just installed the card, have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers?
Have you made sure that your motherboard chipset drivers are up to date?
Have you checked that the video lead running from your card to your monitor is properly inserted?
Have you tried a different video cable?
Have you checked that the card is definitely seated properly in the motherboard and that the PCI-e power connectors are plugged into it properly?

Sorry for the big list but it would be a good start if you could answer some or all of those questions :)

Edit: Forgot to mention, Have you checked the temperatures inside your case? Try ntune and see what temp it says your card is at

have done most of the things on the list but am going to double check the wheter card is idd steaed well and the connectors aswell as update my chipset if needed, will report back asap

p.s updated my previous post to state my powersupply since i forgot ( its 500 W)

Im having major problems with screen tear, its all come about since i installed iz3d and tri def. I have no idea how to remove both drivers either and when i remove the reg it says i cant :( Its making my games unplayable. Any advice?

P.S Sorry to hijack the thread

allright i can say yes to most of ure above questions. As i said powersupply is 500 W , chipset drivers r up to date , i have check and rechecked all the leads and connectors , drivers are new and installed .

I have not tried a different video cable since i dont have one at home... but the screen / video cable worked perfectly with my other setup so i dont think it could have simply broken on the same day i installed all the new hardware.

temp of the card is an average of 22 degrees btw

@Myke, in that case it sounds like you might be looking at RMA'ing the card. Have you checked the monitor with a different source btw? Also do you have a different PCI express slot on your board you can try the card in?

@Shane are they not uninstallable through the control panel, I have never used either of those programs so I am not sure. If you have uninstalled them already then something like piriform's ccleaner's registry cleaner might get rid of any left over entries. Also you really should start your own thread about this, you will be far more likely to get the help you need

Cheers Blu, yeh i will give it a go tonight as i really want to get into saints row and nfs (ill get flamed for not playing skyrim) if not ill post new thread.

hey blue thx for the reply

ive thought of it being the card but wouldnt there be any other signs or issues if idd the card was faulty? i can run all the major games on ultra without a single issue ( except ofc the tears) my event viewer shows no related hardware issues at all. I just find it hard to believe that if the card would be faulty this would be the only wayu it manifests.

I havent tried my screen anywhere else, at home its impossible unfortunately :/.. i will however try it with a different pci slot on my motherboard tonight.

any other ideas would be much appreciated here guys.

You are welcome. Maybe you can help me with a problem one day :D

There wouldn't necessarily be any other signs, each fault tends to be a bit unique. Also you say you find it hard to believe that this would be the only way in which a fault would manifest itself, however from my point of view it is a pretty big manifestation to be appearing in everything you do.

The major reasons for graphical problems / glitches tend to be:

1. overheating - which we have already established is not a problem
2. Lack of power to the gfx card - You have a good branded PSU and 500w should be enough for running a single 560ti.
3. Loose cable connection / faulty cable - which again you are sure is not a problem
4. Faulty gfx card.

By process of elimination it is starting to look as though your card must be faulty. There are always a few faulty cards shipped during the mass distribution so you could just have been unlucky.

Of course we want to exhaust all the possibilities before going the RMA route so let us know how it behaves in the other pci-e slot.

right i asked a friend about switching monitors and he suggested coming over with it so first we tried it with a new cable, and suprise suprise , no more weird tearing.... so it seems to rly have been a faulty lead afterall :) so even though i was being an idiot in assuming it wasnt broken just because it would have been a big coincidence im very happy to report the issue seems to have been solved xD

so thx again for the help blue much appreciated!!!
