New Graphics Card required!

Hello everyone

I am still using my GTX580 that I purchased in 2010 and whilst it's an awesome card, it's starting to struggle playing newer games, especially whilst I'm streaming at the same time.

I currently have the following:

PSU: Corsair CX600
Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Rev.1
GPU: EVGA GTX580
CPU: i72600k
DDR3: 8GB (2x4GB)

I'd like to upgrade my graphics card and perhaps add more RAM. I was wondering if my Motherboard could handle DDR4?

I have been comparing graphics cards and it looks like the best, most affordable choice would be the 1070-Ti.

If anyone could advise I would be very grateful.

Thank you

Drewsan

Hallo,

Your system is quite old and does not support DDR4 memory.
Your processor i7-2600K is weak for today's standards and a bottleneck when multi-tasking - gaming and streaming.

You need an 8-core/16-thread or at least a 6-core/12-thread modern CPU.

Think of it and share a budget, so we can help you.

Really? I rarely see much CPU utilization. My Gcard memory is overused and the issue I have is frame rates dropping whilst streaming or under load. My system memory is at about 70% when streaming and playing a game. Would updating my card solve anything?

streaming is normally cpu intensive - if running without a dedicated capture card/second system.
see some benchmarks here: https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwrevie...ew-stream-benchmarks-gaming-blender?showall=1
maybe the reason that you don't see much cpu load is that your GPU is the main bottleneck and therefore, your 2600k doesn't need to stretch itself to supply your GTX 580 with data and encode the stream at the same time.
so if you upgrade your GPU to something better, then your 2600k may be the main bottleneck.

Hmnnn, oh dear. Thank you for the advice everyone, you've been very helpful.

I suppose I might need to upgrade the entire thing, but I don't have the budget atm. If I were to upgrade (if I could) my gcard, what would be better for gaming? 1070's are about the right price for me atm, I might get some more system memory too.

Thank you all

i'd get a vega 56 instead. can normally be had for £300 if you look around/wait for discounts.

yeah, 16gb ram will help.
also please note that your system runs on ddr3 ram. ddr4 ram is incompatible

Awesome, thank you. I settled on a GTX 1070 in the end, which I picked up for £230. I'll be adding some XMS3 2x8GB soon, too.
V nice. Enjoy.
Just fyi, if your board has 4 ram slots, might be cheaper/easier to get another 2*4gb sticks of ram. Also I wouldnt buy ddr3 ram new, as they're dead tech

Ok, in case anyone was interested...

I've recieved my components now. The GTX 1070 is installed, alongside 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro Series (1600Mhz, CL9).

I have seen a significant performance boost. With the GTX 580 I was getting significant amounts of stuttering with 95% GPU load and VRAM over capacity on low settings (Resi 2). Now I am seeing a 74% GPU load with 30-40% VRAM usage.

Thank you all so much for your help.

Best regards

now CPU bottlenecked :p hehe

nah, enjoy the performance. overclock your 2600k if you want - 4.5ghz is easily achieved with minimal increase to voltages :)

I may, I'm content for the PC to run smoothly atm, CPU is 40% load IIRC. If I stream at a lower resolution I'm all good. :P
